Wilde Family of Lancashire

Just a thought....if it was John Platt(s) who arrived on the Trafalgar then is it not possible that the Mr Platts and neice who arrived on that ship is John Platt and Mary Ann Wilde, who may have run away together and travelled as Uncle and niece.........on the manifest is Mr Platts and neice, she is not named, arriving March 1850 and married in the November

 

Have requested a transcript of John William & Mary Ann's marriage. So, will see if that sheds any light on it. I have not been able to trace John's arrival in Australia but am hoping that the Trafalgar may be the answer for Mary Ann.
I have also been researching their children. The first was Rachel - possible after his mother? The next, John Edward - Possibly after her father? There's also a George and Joseph - both names of her brothers. Fingers crossed.
Matt, you don't possible have a death record for Mary Ann do you?

 

Thanks AnnB for posting this. it's made me open up my research into the Wildes again. As I previously mentioned FMP said that the only hope was to look at the original at the British Museum. I don't think I'll be visiting there in the near future. I recently asked the "Fingal Local Studies" for help. Their thoughts were that it could possibly be 'one of the Palmer family of Kenure house in Rush'. I don't think that would be the case as the captain is described as a relative. So change of tack..Does anyone know if there is a list of inmates for White Cross Prison? Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

 

The UK National archives says that they are available at London Metropolitan Archives.

‘The friends of Mr W Green are respectfully informed that the remains of his late Mother in Law, Mary Ann Platt, will be removed from his residence, Toronto Street, Ovingham, Tuesday Feb 7 at 3pm for later interment in the Hindmarsh Cemetery’

Received the Sth Austn marriage transcript it shows:-
John William PLATTER (x his mark) aged 22. moulder
Mary Ann WILD aged 25 spinster
Married 23/11/1850 @ the Manse Freeman Street (Church of Scotland) - after banns
Freemans Street Chapel congregational church sadly has gone. Perhaps records have been archived by Pilgrims Uniting Church around the corner in Flinders St.

Still haven't found JWP arriving in australia under the name of Platt/Patts or PLatter. I think that the name Platter has been a misspelled by the transcriber as the index shows Platt.

Have sent away for a transcript of Mary Wild arriving on the Trafalgar 1850. Fingers crossed.

In the original post I had her death in 1911 at Ovingham Adelaide.

 

This would definitely clear up a few things if that were the case

 

Sorry Matt I should have asked if you had a transcript or certificate. It MAY give details of where she was born - (though unfortunately death records are the most likely to be incorrect).

The Reg Butler list of passengers on the Trafalgar also has that Mr Platts is 'perhaps the John Platts who married Laura Dumble 30/12/1850 and settled at Gilles Plains'.

 

Googling a couple of days ago I found an interesting article from Trove posted on another forum, (not sure which one as I immediately lost it never to be refound)!
So with a bit of difficulty and searching of Trove here it is. It is from from the Chronicle Adelaide Sat 14 May 1927 .

Mrs Green of Toronto Street Ovingham was 75 years of age on Sunday. She was born at Second Street Brompton. She is just recovering from an illness caused by the heatwave in January. She is able to read and sew without glasses. Her parents came to Australia on the ship Trafalgar, leaving England in December 1849 and reaching here in the following April. Her maiden name was Wild . She met her first husband Mr Platt on the boat and they were married at St Andrews Church in November 1850. Mr Platt was the first turncock on the waterworks at Adelaide and the first fire engine was stationed at their home in Waymouth Street. Mrs Green who is a widow had six children and three are living-Mr Percy Green of Wallaroo, Mr Fred Green of Prospect and Mrs Rosenthal of Ovingham.

There seem to be one or two inaccuracies but it does sound as though John and Mary Ann could have met on the Trafalgar.

John is definitely not the Mr Platts mentioned as Mr Platts travelled cabin class. Other forums say he was a Charles Platts, local businessman, and quote newspaper reports to confirm.

Reg Butler's passenger list is longer than the written manifest at the Archives and adds " Possibly still some unnamed passengers"
Would that be likely?

 

Isn't Trove wonderful. The Mary Ann Wild who came on the Trafalgar was a servant from Middlesex. So it certainly seems that she was the one that married John William Platt...but which Mary Ann. I guess only DNA will answer if it's John Edward Wilde's daughter.
