What does it say after 'Domestic Servant out of (a?) ...' I know it means she is out of work/job/employ/position/situation but what does it actually say, it doesn't seem to be any of these words

if anyone wants to look up the original it is Mary E Elford, RG10/1999/96/2

Could it be out of a home?

I thought about that, it does seem to begin with H. In that case does it simply mean she doesn't sleep at her employer's rather than she is out of work?

Any idea of this place-name within the hamlet of Upton, in the parish of Osmington, I've had a look at a map and can't work it out

Bank was my first thought but the first example seems to be 'Br-' and then I saw the second and it looked more like 'Ma-'

So I've considered Brank, Brant, and Marsh, but will probably end up with my first consideration ...

If you read to the end of this about Upton Fort, Osmington, you will find mention of Brant Cottage and Little Brant :)

This is the occupation of William F Tregarthen, born c 1832 St Marys, Cornwall (Scilly)

I can read 'Without Cure of Souls, Her Majesty's Inspector of Schools...' but what are the last two words?

    Screenshot 2021-01-31 at 11.07.30 PM.png

If you want to search for him, Ancestry have the surname as Legarthan

And while you are puzzling over that, what exactly is the name of his abode?

If it helps in 1861 he was Curate of Osmington and in 1881 he described as HMSS (Boot)? That helped didnt it?

    E??clerical Department is my guess.

The other one FMP has it as The Elms and I'm inclined to agree.

    That'd work ;)
William F Tregarthen was an Inspector of schools so I guess H M S S would have something to do with Her/His Majesty's Schools ????

From thepeerage.com we find that William Francis Tregarthen married Harriet Fonblanque Phillips daughter of Sir James Evans Phillips and Mary Anne Bickley. It just has William as a school inspector.

Yes. Something ?????clerical Department which I think as he was a Rev it could be something to do with an inspector of religious studies at schools.
