My ancestor Repentance Stowell aka Stowal married Elizabeth Wade nee Unwin, widow 25 Dec 1740 at Chelmsford, Essex, they baptised seven children at Sandon and Great Baddow, Essex. It's odd they don't appear to have named children Repentance or Elizabeth. I have searched many times and in many ways on Ancestry's EPRI, Family Search, FreeReg and FMP's preliminary search for Repentance and cannot locate him. There is a marriage on Ancestry I would like to follow up on, Repentance Stall, mariner, bachelor, married Elizabeth Lucas, spinster, by licence 8 Jul 1712 at St Paul, Shadwell, Tower Hamlets, Middlesex, I can imagine Stowell being pronounced Stall by Londoners back then. Try as I might I cannot find any children for this couple, I have searched Ancestry's EPRI, the London Metropolitan Archives and a general Search of "All records" on Ancestry, still can't find any children or anything else bar the marriage for that couple. I realise that Repentance Stall being a mariner means it's possible he met Elizabeth Lucas anywhere, there is of course the possibility he could have visited Essex on a Sailing Barge and come to that, come up to Chelmsford via Maldon by canal. Can anyone think of somewhere else I can try for children of Repentance and Elizabeth Stall/Stowell? Btw I am aware of a Repentance Stowel, aged 32, buried at Rayleigh Essex 6 Jul 1802, I suspect he could be a grandson of the Repentance Stowell I'm looking for. Regards
Here is a left field, off piste thought Derek. Could he have been one of the legitimately baptised children who subsequently repented some dark deed or over use of the falling down water????
I have a family in Yorkshire that I've always known as STOW, but going back some of them are sometimes found as STOWELL, so maybe the shorter form is worth looking for as well. In the next parish (I haven't conclusively proved a link, but think it's very likely) is a family whose variants include STOW, STOWELL, STAW and STAWELL. What might make this relevant to you, Derek, is that they almost certainly came across from Norfolk some time in the 16th century, and in my searches I've found some or all of these variants scattered across Norfolk and into Suffolk Incidentally, Repentance sounds a typical puritan/non-conformist name, so do make sure to check beyond just Church of England records.
Oh dear! Would that be the same for the UK, if so another theory bites the dust. Btw looking back through notes there's a mention that the Repentance Stall marriage was from Marriage Allegations.
Blackmogs, with that guy anything is possible, I'd even give consideration to him being beamed down from an alien spaceship.
Thanks for the thoughts Arthur, I'm pretty sure I have checked non-con records because when I first came across him, Repentance struck me as a non-con name. However, I think I'll try those records again there might possible be additions, worth a try.
Thanks Sandie, yes he is mine, after I had rounded up his children I found his burial, I've got details of Elizabeth his wife and his details except for the birth or baptism of Repentance covered. i have the marriages of two of his daughter Mary and Esther who were obliging enough to marry in Sandon, a pretty certain marriage for son Richard and 2 possible marriages for William. I know his son Benjamin bap 1741 at Sandon married an Elizabeth but haven't found the marriage, I have found some children of Benjamin & Elizabeth born at North Fleet, Essex. I had high hopes of Hatfield Peverel being where I would find Repentance Stowell, I found these three children at Hatfield Peverel. John Stowell baptised 11 Apr 1685, of John and Hester. William Stowell baptised 17 Nov 1705 of William and Hester William Stowell baptised 31 Jul 1709 of William and Hester. I haven't dismissed the thought that the children of either of those two families could be sibling/s of Repentance especially William, if only Repentance would come out of the woodwork. To show what I feel is the significance of the two Hatfield Peverel families, here are the children of Repentance and Elizabeth Stowell. Benjamin 1741, William 1743, John 1746, Esther 1749, Richard 1750, Mary 1753 and Sarah 1754. John and Richard were baptised at Great Baddow and the rest at Sandon, I am surprised I haven't found a son Repentance or a daughter Elizabeth. It has me wondering where the name Benjamin came from, it's not from Elizabeth's side, if Repentance's father is Benjamin then there goes my Hatfield Peverel theory down the gurgler.
One more for the Robots. William Stewell baptised 28 Dec 1676 at Hatfield Peverel, son of Richard and Martha. Suspect in the PR image Stewell would be Stowell but you never know.
Thanks Sandie. I spent yesterday going back to the beginning of Hatfield Peverel PRs with Stowel(l), the first mention are two children in 1618 and 1622, children of Amos and Ann(a) Stowell. The earliest mention of someone who is definitely a Stowell in Essex on the EPRI is a marriage, Josye Stowell married Richard Cops 8 Feb 1564 at Feering. There were three possible Stowell baptisms. Johane (Joan) Stole 15 Oct 1564 at Fairstead, father Birgarde. Elonar Stowle 25 Mar 1564 at West Hanningfield, no parent names. Johnm Stowle 8 Apr 1565 at Gt Stambridge, father John. Stowel are very thin on the ground, I'm thinking of checking out some people name Stawell to see what the parent names are, although I'm inclined to think Stawell might be a name in it's own right, perhaps a variation of Staywell if that's a name, it seems to ring a bell, albeit faintly. The earliest male definitely a Stowell in a Essex search was Richard Stoele baptised 3 Feb 1573 at Theydon Garnon, no parent names. Followed by Andrewe Stowell 10 Apr 1575 baptised at Gt Parndon, mother Cirdlie Stowell.
Regarding your post 9, Derek, FMP have a baptism at Witham, which looks pretty near to Hatfield Peverel, on 27 April 1684 of a Benjamin son of Robert & Alice STOWELL?? Not that I have managed to trace said Benjamin any further - so far - after his baptismal record! Janet
Thanks Janet, noted. It's another "no wonder I couldn't find him" moment, on Ancestry's Essex Parish Register Index (EPRI) the entry is Beniamin Barwell, other details match those of FMP. I think somewhere I saw a Robert & Alice Stowell, have to check my notes.
