Robert was born 1851 in Bexley (Registered March Dartford - Free BMD). I have tracked him up to the 1881 Census where he is still living with his parents, Robert and Caroline Miller, at 2 Mount Pleasant, Richmond, Surrey, employed as a Tailor. Can find nothing else. Could anyone help to fill in any missing information? Thanks Bernard
There is this one, age is a little out. FMP have transcribed his name as Maller. In the Workhouse Robert Mellar Relationship - Inmate Marital status - Single Age - 36 Birth year - 1855 Birth town - Richmond, Surrey Occupation - Tailor Registration district - Richmond upon Thames RG12 Piece number - 622 Folio - 117 Page - 6
Following on from this, I wonder if he is the R.M. whose occupation is Tailor and birth year is 1855, a patient in the Brookwood Asylum, Woking in 1901: Piece 599 Folio 25 Page 44
Woking (1901 census) is in the Guildford registration district. Could this be his death Robert Miller Gender - Male Birth year - 1854 Age - 55 Death quarter - 4 Death year - 1909 District - Guildford County - Surrey Volume - 2A Page - 57
Hi, Thanks for this info. FreeBMD has Robert's birth as 1851, but as you say it's only 4 years out. My Cousin who's also into family research has been looking at Brookwood Asylum records for another ancestor who ended up there so he may be able to discover something.
Robert had a brother Thomas who lived with his family in Guildford, so it's possible he drifted there when he left the Brookwood Asylum. Will check1901 Census to see if he shows up.
If it is he in the Asylum and he was a lunatic he probably died there. Once you were diagnosed as a lunatic the only place for you was the Asylum.
Ancestry has a record under the record set Surrey, England, Admissions to Brookwood and Holloway Mental Hospitals, 1867-1900: Admitted to Brookwood Asylum, Woking: Robert Miller Admitted: 7 Apr 1899 Reception Order: 6 Apr 1899 Date of Continuation of Reception Order: 23 Mar 1900 & 23 Mar 1901 Aged 44, Single, CoE Previous Abode: Richmond Union Workhouse Union, County or Borough to which Chargeable: Richmond Date of Medical Certificate & who signed by: HF Chapman 6 Apr 1899 Form of Mental Disorder: Dementia Cause: N/K Bodily Condition: Good Duration of existing attack: N/K Age on first attack: N/K Date of Removal, Discharge or Death: 20 Jan 1902. Not Improved. This ties in with the following, from the record set UK, Lunacy Patients Admission Registers, 1846-1912: 7 Apr 1899 Robert Miller admitted to the Woking Asylum. Discharged 20 Jan 1902 20 Jan 1902 Robert Miller admitted to the West Sussex Asylum. Discharged 10 Jul 1903 There is possibly a missing record (there seem to be very few admissions recorded for 1903), because the next one is this: 27 May 1909 Robert Miller admitted to the Woking Asylum. Discharged (died) 13 Nov 1909
Hi Hi, Thanks for all this detail. It makes sad reading. Hi. Thanks for all this info. It makes sad reading. In 1881 he was following his Fathers trade then it all went wrong.
