Sarah ROLFE was born in 1842 and was baptised on 23rd October that year at St Nicholas, Rochester, Kent, her parents being Thomas and Mary Ann née HOGBEN.

She appears on the 1851 and 1861 censuses and then weds William Charles Frederick GILES on 20th January 1864 at St Peter’s in Maidstone.

The couple went on to have Florence in 1865 and William in 1867, both born in Maidstone. These children appear on the 1871 census living in Scrubs Lane, Maidstone, where they are shown as boarders in the home of William MARLOW and his wife Ann (Piece 941, folio 96, page 12).

However, their parents are nowhere to be seen. :headbang:

The census in 1881 shows Florence and William still living in Scrubs Lane with the now widowed William MARLOW who, just to confuse things, is now using the surname of CHALLENDER. :sceptical: His occupation and year and place of birth are the same as in 1871... (Piece 928, folio 56, page 19)

But what happened to the parents, Sarah and William?

    Over to you sleuths. ;)

    Thank you. :)

Ann Beadle and William Chaloner appear together

Thanks. :) That explains the name difference. I have a several times great grandfather who kept appearing under different surnames. It turned out that he was born illegitimately but took on his father's surname from time to time - even though his parents never married... :sceptical:

William Charles Henry Giles (Goles on FMP transcription) named father is not a Giles - not sure quite what the name is - Done?

Could the missing couple be now using this name?

I had seen the certificate but not noted the different name. That could well be the answer..... If we can work out what it says! :headbang:

Looking at pages either side I think the first
letter of the fathers surname is in fact a 'P'.
    Perhaps Pore?

    Confused...

If William was born in 1852, he would not have been old enough to wed in 1864.

    Edited:
Aha! I see that this was a baptism. ;)

William Charles Frederick, which is on the marriage certificate. Not sure where the Henry came from...

Wonder who Maria GILES (one of the witnesses at the marriage) is? There is a Maria GILES born 1827 Reading, Berkshire living at Scrubs Lane in the 1861 census - probably just a co-incidence

An Alice Giles married Samuel Bowden 31 Dec 1848, Maidstone. They had two daughters shortly afterwards:

BOWDEN, ALICE MARIA mmn GILES GRO Reference: 1849 S Quarter in MAIDSTONE Volume 05 Page 336 (interesting middle name)

BOWDEN, ELIZABETH mmn GILES GRO Reference: 1853 M Quarter in MAIDSTONE Volume 02A Page 406

According to the census, Alice Sr was born c1811-1813, Reading, and her husband was an attendant at the county asylum. In 1861 Maria Giles is a house servant to Charlotte Smith, whose husband was also an asylum attendant.

The earliest I can see Maria is in 1851 in Kensington as a servant, although she was baptised 22 Oct 1824, the daughter of Thomas & Sarah Giles

Alice is a mystery! Perhaps the marriage certificate will shed some light on things.

    Thanks, @Andromeda :)

I shall keep these notes to one side as it is the ROLFE line that I am currently working on. Just need to find out what happened to Sarah and William... :headbang:
