Not Charles Frederick Pine buried Maidstone Sutton Road Cemetery. Died 16/12/1933 making him about 91?
Ooh, that's just under a mile away from me - Sutton Road Cemetery. Just looked on the GRO - aged 54, so born 1879.
Sorry to do this, but there was an older child born to William & Sarah. GILES, KATE ALICE mmn ROLFE GRO Reference: 1864 S Quarter in SHEPPEY Volume 02A Page 667 Baptism 4 Dec 1864 at St Peter, Maidstone Kate Alice d/o William Charles Frederick & Sarah GILES of Rolfe's (?) Cottage Heath, Labourer The age is out but in 1871 there is a 4-year-old Kate A Giles born Maidstone, Kent, listed as an adopted child to [??] Mills living in East Peckham, Kent. Possibly (or possibly not) the same person - now with the surname Mills - turns up in Maidstone in the 1881-1901 census as servant to a watchmaker & jeweller named James Martin.
A William Charles GILES married a Florence Rose KENWOOD 16 Jan 1898 at St Paul's Church, Knightsbridge. He names his father as William Charles Frederick GILES, a Ship's Steward. Certificate on Ancestry. On the census, he says he was born in Maidstone.
Don't you lot ever sleep? Thank you for these details. I shall dive into my notes later today and see where it all leads me.
That sounds like him as his father was a Ship's Steward according to his own marriage certificate. This makes me wonder if William and Sarah sailed off into the sunset somewhere, never to be heard of again...
More likely Sarah died, or went into an institution, after William's birth, not that I can find a death for her I did note, both Florence and William were bap. on the same day, 26/5/1867, I wonder if William and Ann Marlow/Challender took them or William CF and Sarah (who are named as parents). The address given is Banning (or Barning) Heath, and no occ. entered for the father (image on FMP).
Oh dear, the address of the Kent County Lunatic Asylum was Barming Heath, near Maidstone my spell checker has just advised me lunatic asylum is an offensive expression
This doesn't really help, but makes interesting reading (despite what MM's spell checker thinks ) It's the 21st Annual Report for the Barming Heath Asylum 1867 Code: https://wellcomecollection.org/works/xw23j86z/items?canvas=1
It looks like the Barming Heath Asylum records have survived and are housed at the Centre for Kentish Studies. Code: https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/hospitalrecords/details.asp?id=2478&hospital=barming+heath&town=&searchdatabase.x=41&searchdatabase.y=10
I wouldn't get too excited about the asylum - there's nothing to indicate that either William or Sarah were admitted and we already know (post #17) that William's presumed mother, Alice Giles, married an Asylum Attendant (Samuel Bowden), and that Maria Giles was a servant in the home of an Asylum Attendant. The family's links to the asylum therefore seem to be by employment rather than admission.
