The 1871 census for Brighton has Caleb GOLDSMITH, his wife Mary Ann and their children Louisa, Caleb, Eliza and Ernest living at 1 Popular Place, Eastbourne. (Piece 1040, folio 111, page 42) At the end of this list of children is a 23 year-old Francis Philip GOLDSMITH noted as “son”. If he was Caleb’s son, Caleb would have been aged about 17 when he was born. Not impossible, but there is no trace of Francis with Caleb on either the 1851 or 1861 censuses. If he was the son of Mary Ann, she would have been aged about 15 when he was born. There is no trace of Francis on her 1851 or 1861 censuses either. This entry in 1871 is the only instance that I have found for this person. If Francis may be found anywhere else, I would be most grateful. Thank you.

I'm not sure .... but have you checked The Weald? I had a look and a Frances (female) Goldsmith shows up with her mmn as PAYNE on the 1881 census. Info from the Weald. I checked the 1881 and there is FrancEs Goldsmith age 62 widowed dairy woman but born 1839 with her is her brother James Payne age 71. Now...didnt Caleb marry Mary Ann PAYNE?
I will have a look later but the 1871 Francis has the middle name of Philip. Certainly worth a rummage as the PAYNE name is involved. Thank you.
Had a look and these were a different branch. Frances married David GOLDSMITH from Burwash - just over 20 miles from Eastbourne, but there seem to be millions of GOLDSMITHs and PAYNEs in Sussex and trying to sort them out is rather like trying to knit fog.
