I have been working on one of my distant branches, and got my cousin to double- check the family for me, as it appeared first cousins married (they did). When I checked the children born on the GRO index, for 2 of them the result appeared with no mmn, yet when she looked, the mmn was there. I still get the same result with no mmn - Strange! No, the maiden name is not showing for me, either. Perhaps an email to the GRO to ask them what the reason might be? If you do send one, please let us know what they say.
That's how it works for some entries, and I think it's a privacy thing. If you know the mmn it will confirm it, but if you don't, you can't use this to find it out. I'm pretty sure this doesn't apply to the older entries, so maybe it's the ones less than 100 years old where they hide it. (But in some ways it seems a bit pointless since there are other ways to find a mmn - which hopefully the GRO isn't wanting to shut down.)
Just tested it with my mums name b 1923 and yes name not there until I put maiden name on form then it appears must be as Arthur says less than 100 years new one on me and yes as Ann says it is on freebmd!
I've just checked a cousin who according to the 1939 Register was born on 16 May 1922. His mmn shows up at the GRO site, so maybe they unlock them a year at a time?
Me too. Like others, I tried it with and without the mmn, and the details only appear if you know them. My children's births in 1980's have my maiden name on them on FreeBMD, but again only if you enter it on the GRO index I have learned something today
And for me. Like Arthur says, it appears to be a privacy (data protection?) thing for births that are possibly still alive. I've also noticed more and more careless errors on GRO - misspellings that do not match the "text photo" available on freebmd. ("Horace" for "Horatio" eg) Jane
Probably staff working from home on their own laptops, which have "text correct" on them. Government ones don't - well, they didn't when I worked for them back in the mists of time...
Oh no, only just found all this juicy information when looking for something totally unconnected. This week I have had a couple of such queries and then just thought oh yes its because they are well into the 20th century and so don't show. Now I have read this and can't blooming remember who I was looking for - missed the boat again
