Portsmouth customs officers

Just looked at UK National Archives and the Customs Outport Records for Portsmouth are CUST 58. There are other Portsmouth records in CUST 33.

Found her baptism at Portsea Meeting House 18/5/1826 born 13/10/1809.
 
One question before I delve a bit deeper…..not regarding Henry James but Mary Dormer Cater. Did Mary have a sister Jane born c1811?

The reason I ask is that there is a tree on Family Search with Mary Dormer 1809 and Jane Jewell 1811, their mother Mary is said to have died in 1823. However in 1815 there is a marriage of Richard Cater, widowed and Jane Dormer also widowed St Mary’s Portsea. Jane Jewell Cater is baptised 17/8/1823 but born 20/12/1817, father Richard Cater and Jane, another non conformist baptism I’m guessing. Jane Jewell Cater married William Lewis 9/5/1850. In 1841 Richard Cater is living in Gloucester Street Portsea, age 67 with Jane Cater 55 (?) and Margaret Jewell 80 (mother in law?)
In 1851 Richard Cater 78 head, Jane Cater 75 daughter Jane Lewis and son in law William Lewis.
The death of Mary, Richards first wife must have been well before the marriage in 1815 if he married again in 1815. Looking in Portsea, the Jewells and Dormers all seem intertwined. There is a marriage in 1804 of Jane Jewell to Isaac Dormer and I’m again guessing that this is the Jane Dormer who married Richard Cater. I’m hoping all this might lead to the Clark’s.

Mary Cater's birth was noted as Non Conformist in 1809 Portsea. No baptism as yet. Parents Mary and Richard Cater. In 1826 when she was baptised, age 15, she was as Mary DORMER Cater, mother Mary father Richard. Residence was Gloucester Street. 1841 Richard and Jane (DORMER) Cater were living in Gloucester Street Portsea. So when she was baptised she took the middle name as Dormer the married name of her step mother. Jane was given the name Jewell, her stepmothers maiden name. How does that sound? I think there might be an earlier marriage for Richard maybe not, but in 1799 is the marriage Richard Cater to Elizabeth Steele, St Marys Portsea, no children found for them but there is a death for an Elizabeth Cater in 1799.
 
Jane Jewell Cater was baptised Non conformist 17/8/1823 but her birth was 20/12/1817, her mother was Jane Jewell/Dormer not Mary Blake. So a death for Mary Blake/ Cater should be after 1809 and before 1815.
 
There is a burial in St Mary’s Portsea for a Mary Carter (Cater) 24/12/1812. A possibility maybe. Found on FS no other details and not on Find a Grave.

All sounds plausible.

We need a marriage of Richard to Jane (Dormer) /(Jewell).

Jane daughter of Richard and Mary Blake born 1811 but baptised 17/8/1823 after the burial of Mary Blake 18/2/1823. So again plausible.
