Finding Betsey Webb 1838

I have had considerable help with this family but with only four days left of my subscription I am making another attempt to find Betsey.

The only evidence Betsey existed is an entry in 1841. Four year old Betsey Webb b 1837 is living with her father William Webb, mother Jane (both born in Surrey in 1811), brother William b. 1832, and sisters Elizabeth b 1834, Anne b. 1838 and Caroline b. 1841.

The family are living in Brixton, (parish of Clapham), Surrey. HO107/1053/6 folio 33 p. 2. The older and younger children were baptised in Clapham, Holy Trinity. Father William was a shoemaker/ cordwainer not a white smith. The family were transcribed as Well on Ancestry. Betsey is not with them in 1851.

Thanks to members of this forum in a past guise I have details of other family members.
 
Just for clarity, I see that Jane, (Baptised Holy Trinity Clapham 25.02.1838, born 29.01.1838) isn't Betsey as she was buried 3.12.1840.

I don't have Jane in my tree. Was her father the whitesmith, William Webb or is she one I missed?
 
Yes, he's described as a 'Smith'. Jane's address at her burial was Spring Gardens', Clapham. Sorry, you think that's the wrong family anyway.
 
I'm confused. What is your 1851 census ref? - I've only found the "White Smith' family in it.

Thanks Flook. It took me ages to separate the two families and work out who belonged to who. I have a GGrandmother's marriage certificate and online records give William's occupation as shoemaker or cordwainer.

I see that William and Jane had Henry Thomas (1847) and George Francis 1849) baptised at Holy Trinity Clapham. Have you ploughed through the burial records for this church up to 1851 to see if she died without being indexed properly?

...and the baptism and marriage records. So far nothing for a Betsey. Betsey's sister Jane on the 1851 census is actually Sarah Jane Webb so it is possible Betsey is a nickname or second name. I have been looking at all records for daughters of William Webb.
 
Quite. I've come across a census entry which looks promising but I've not been able to verify anything from it.

1891: Elizabeth Webb born c1837. RG12/1834 fol. 100 p.18>
Address: Falmouth. Elizabeth Webb, lodger, single, 54, Living on own means, born Brixton, Surrey.

I am confused. :confused: On FMP, the family are also transcribed as WELLS. Looking at the original, they certainly look like WELLs rather than WEBB.

To check this out, I looked for the birth registration for Caroline, the youngest who is recorded as aged 1 in 1841, which means that she was born 1839/40. A Caroline WELLS birth was registered in Wandsworth registration district in the December quarter of 1839 (volume 4, page 463) and this RD covers Clapham. There is no corresponding entry for Caroline WEBB.

Therefore, could this be a completely different family of WELLS rather than WEBB?

Bear with me. I worked backwards from a Grandmother. I'll post my findings.
 
  • Ada Matilda Bullen b. 11 Mar. 1879, Brixton. Parents John Bullen and Jane. Ada was baptised with her brother John William and sister Emily Elizabeth on the 4th May 1879. Residence 25 Elizabeth St, Brixton. They can be found at the same address in 1881. RG11/614/folio 67 p. 25. Mother Jane b. 1843 in Brixton.
  • June 21st 1876, John Bullen married Sarah Jane Webb Alexander, widow. Father William Webb, labourer. Witnesses William and Jane Webb.
  • Sept 6th, 1867 Sarah Jane Webb m. William Alexander in Holy Trinity, Clapham. Father William Webb boot maker.
  • Sarah Jane was born on 29th June 1845, mother Jane Webb, nee Stotter, father William cordwainer. Residence, Northumberland Place, Clapham.
  • Jane Stotter was baptised in Holy Trinity, Clapham in 1810. William Webb was baptised in Lambeth in 1810.
  • I believe this is the family in 1861 RG9/363/ folio152p27 children Eliza b 1834, Caroline b 1841, Jane b. 1845, Henry b. 1847, George b.1845. I have found baptisms for Eliza, Henry and George but not for Caroline or Jane ( Sarah Jane)
  • 1851 children William b. 1833, Caroline b. 1840, Jane b. 1844, Henry b. 1846 and George b 1850. Post #9
  • 1841 Post #1. William 'Wells' looks like Webb to me on the original plus he is a shoemaker. There is some overlap with children. With help I have traced Ann Webb. I also found marriages for William and Caroline, father William Webb Cordwainer.
 
Checking through records for the 1841 ' Wells' family I can find no evidence they actually existed. So I'm assuming they are my Webb family. I have baptisms for all family members on the 1841 census except Caroline and Betsey. I have a marriage for Caroline, father William Webb, shoemaker and witness. His signature matches the one on her brother William's certificate.

Betsey is still a mystery :(
