Oh dear, I was thinking of subscribing to FMP, not now! Not sure where to go, any idea anyone? Previously had 12 months with Ancestry and now not sure they have anything new to offer me.

Heard some fair things of the Genealogist but no personal experience. Am happy with Ancestry who seem to keep coming up with new bits, trouble is the new bits don't always appeal to everybody.

I used to use the Genealogist, but gave them up in favour of Ancestry, as they have so much more of relevance to the things I want to look for. I have had the odd foray into FMP of late, but haven't stayed long as the site seems so clumsy now.........I lose interest in what I'm looking for before I find it

Same here. I've found some useful stuff on TG in the past, but keep coming back to A for their Birmingham and Yorkshire records. I did used to find FMP very useful but agree with others in that I find it hard going now.

I am also using my iPad and find I can't view any images. My PC is running on XP so I only use it when absolutely necessary, like when I need to print, as our printer is also too old for the iPad to recognise.
Hope FMP sort themselves out soon otherwise I probably won't renew.

I don't think they are intending to sort anything any time soon. They were 'moderating' comments within their own forum a few weeks ago or simply ignoring anything unflattering. I have commented on their Facebook page but before I went on hollibobs they were in the habit of deleting anything they didn't like. A person from WDYTYA magazine met with them to discuss the problems but the reports of her meeting seemed a bit wishy washy to me. Even so, if they start getting lambasted in national mags like that they might wake up. There is also a rather interesting Facebook page called Can't find My Past which allows people a bit of freedom to vent their frustration. This whole exercise is a classic example of how to completely destroy what was a very good product. TG (The Genealogist) has very cleverly jumped in to give assurances to members that they are not intending to change anything on their site and are currently offering £50 off a diamond membership making them very attractive to anyone who is sick of FMP. Oh and for those of us with a membership to FMP be very careful to untick the automatic renewal option if you don't want to carry on and then watch like a hawk as allegedly they have renewed even when people unticked.

Thank you for the reminder. I have updated my account accordingly to not renew in October.

As for the offer from TG this may work but I am reluctant to pay for anything on-line until my computer is replaced some time towards the end of June. So I'm going to sit tight until then.

In the interim I may attempt to figure out FMP. I have 2 chances - slim and no chance!

Hi Everyone, a friend mentioned that there have been mentions of TheGenealogist over here.

Just to give you some background about us. We are a family business, set up in 1992 by my parents. We are known for responding quickly to feedback so If you have any questions about TheGenealogist, please let me know.

Some of you have been asking what the differences are between FMP, Ancestry, GR and TheGenealogist. Who Do You Think Your Are Magazine created this chart to help you see the differences:

Like you with FMP but my Ancestry is still current, I have found various new Tit Bits appearing on Ancestry over the year also useful to recap on what has gone on. Personally I wont spend my money on FMP until they have sorted it out, after all you are paying while they sort it out. I used to be a member and it did have some advantages over Ancestry also some negative points over Ancestry as far as I was concerned. arryboy

Hi Mark - nice to see you. Do feel free to chip in with anything that takes your fancy or even, dare I say it, post your own queries if you have any .

The Genealogist seems to operate out of Wiltshire but its registered office seems to be in Jersey. I wonder why that might be and whether the Public Accounts Committee might have any thoughts on the matter.

Your offer is appreciated though it would be better for members to PM you directly if they have any questions about TG rather than post in the open forum. Apart from our sponsors and family history societies with whom we have reciprocal arrangements we don't have links to paying websites. :D

Hi Peter, TheGenealogist was setup by my parents, who live in Jersey. I live over here in the UK (hence my location on my profile). I hope that clears things up.

Well, Peter, Mark has explained why there are two different addresses and I am sure that the Public Accounts Committee are fully aware, especially as the Genealogist and their parent company, S&N Genealogy, have been established for very many years. :)
