    You probably have these baptisms
    Helena Winifred - 18 December 1890 - born 28 November 1890
Vernon Wilfred - baptised as Wilfred Vernon - 23 May 1894

It appears that your fathers mother Winifred died when he was just 2 years old.

They seemed to be living in Bhusawal at the time of Winifred's death.

You say your father was orphaned when he was 3 or 4. Hmmmmm I can't find a death for a Joseph MacMahon/McMahon around this time.

I have, however, found a marriage for a Joseph Mcmahon in 1897

    Groom: Joseph Mcmahon
    Bride: Kate Alice Eason
Marriage: 30 Jun 1897 Bhusawal, Bombay, India
    G/Father: William Mcmahon
    B/Father: Edward Easom
Indexing Project (Batch) Number: M00210-3, GS Film number: 523878

Could the father, Joseph, have put the child in an orphanage and marry again?

There is a death and burial for a Joseph Mcmahon - died 15 March 1897 and buried 16 March 1897 in Quetta, Bangal, India - same source as post #5. This chap was aged 24 so maybe Chimpy has found pay-dirt.

The full register entry can be seen on Findmypast, in their British India Office Marriages collection. It shows that this Joseph was a 32 year old widower, and a driver for the G.I.P.R. His father, William, is shown as deceased.

It seems very likely that this is the same Joseph whose wife Winifred had died the previous year, as the baptism entries for Wilfred Vernon, Helena Winifred and Reginald (which are also on Findmypast) give their father's occupation as Driver G.I.P.R., Engine Driver G.I.P.R. and Driver G.I.P.Ry., respectively.

Findmypast have a burial for a MacMahon child who may well be a sibling of Wilfred Vernon, Helena and Reginald:

Winifred MacMahon, daughter of - MacMahon Engine Driver G.I.P.R., died on 28 April 1889, aged just 1 day, and was buried on 29 April 1889 at Bhusawal. The cause of death is not recorded.

From the same source, Winnifred Adelaide McMahon, 'wife of Guard G.I.P.R.', died 31 July 1896 and was buried the same day at Bhusawal. She is shown in the burial register as 28 years old. Cause of death: measles.

The date of death matches that given in post #3, but the age at death is quite different.

So far no sign of a Winifred Adelaide Menzies, but there is a tree here which gives her a quite different surname, Reberio. Perhaps that's a typo, for her father's name is given as Joseph Cox Rebeiro:

    http://
    wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=lauza002&id=I6750

The tree has further information about both the McMahon and Rebeiro families. Some key facts are missing (e.g. the date and place of the marriage to Joseph McMahon) so it needs further investigation.

There is a baptism at John Pereira's Trinity Chapel, Madras on 23 January 1870 for a Winifred Adelaide REBEIRO, born 29 July 1869. Parents Joseph Cox and Henrietta Agnes REBEIRO of Khamgaon. Father's occupation Overseer, D(??) P Works (Department of Public Works?). He certainly does sound rather like the J.C.Menzies, late of the Public Works Dept, mentioned in Winifred McMahon's death announcement - apart from having the wrong surname!

What we need is some evidence that this Winifred is really the one who married Joseph McMahon . . .

If you click on McMahon's user name, a drop-down box will appear. One of the options is to send a private message. If you send a message that way it will in turn generate an email to him. :)

Would the name Vernon Wilfred Joseph McMahon and his wife Margaret Delphine McMahon of Indore/Mhow be familiar to you? Their son was Wilfred Joseph McMahon. If so, please contact me
