I like this birth - indexed as Alford on free BMD. I thought the mother might be Grace Marguerite Halse, but she seems to have married a William G Stribley and died in Worthing in 1966 - but as her son David was also born in Brentford in 1912 then maybe there is a connection. Or maybe not - a 1 year old Richard Alford died in Brentford in 1915.
Have you been able to eliminate Marguerita E Stocker b1882, in Guernsey in 1911? Sorry can't check the record .
The address given on the medal roll card is the same address as on the shipping list when he went to Capetown. London Gazette 12 Jan 1917 has Cadet Robert Claude Halford promoted to 2nd Lt (on prob)
Try nationalarchives.gov.uk they have Robert Claude Halford medal card, archive ref. WO372/8.....there is a small charge £3-20 to download it. I know you said you don't want to spend money, but you need proof of anything you claim as yours. Never take information as 100% right without getting the proof. Primary proof are BMD certs. Secondary proof are census and parish records. So many people end up down the wrong tree by not getting the proof. Good luck in finding Marguerite, as was pointed out the birth certificate. Of the sons birth will give you the mothers maiden name.....
This may not be your Robert Claude Halford, second lieutenant Royal Field Artillary because when he resigned in 1911 his age is given as 20.... I can't pass any more onto you because of the t and c of fmp....
Just a very small addition to the total sum - in the Surrey Electoral Registers on Ancestry - Culbean, Cheapside, Horsell - along with Robert Claude Halford is Margurite Elizabeth Halford Ann
You are quite right Mealymoo, his attestation was June 1909 and he resigned 23 Oct 1911. His brother Harold Wm attested at the same time and resigned 26 May 1913. Thanks for pointing out my mistake. Val..
Thanks, Mealymoo - found him. Confirmed with the address on the index cards as the place of business of Halford's Silversmiths, and the Great Missenden residence of the Halford family.
Hi Grizel (and Doug) - not my Halford. Definitely London, Middlesex, Bucks oriented. Not Shropshire, either!
Hi Grizel - as I have stated earlier, I am unable to confirm my Marguerite using Census data as I do not have any info on her last name OR family. I need to confirm using a marriage cert to Robert Claude Halford to get her maiden name. So frustrating that the family never mentions her at all in any of their correspondence. Thanks for trying, though!!!
Hi Lusmum - yes, I have spotted the medal card using Ancestry. It is not that I don't want to spend money, it is not my money to spend!!!! I have to refer all research to the family I am researching for and there's not enough info to justify a purchase at this time. I am well aware of the need to prove and the types of docs that provide that proof - primary, secondary and tertiary proof - however, I need to focus on my Marguerite, rather than her husband Robert. As you say, either a marriage cert or the birth cert for son Richard should provide the maiden name. Crowdsourcing at its best....
There is one more thing you can try, email info@priaulxlibrary.co.uk And ask if they hold a marriage for Robert C Halford to a Marguerite ... I got one in my tree and it was in French but they did a translation for me. This is Guernsey....worth a try then you can ask your friends if they want to buy the cert. Best wishes Val
Hi Lusmum (Val) - thanks for the suggestion. We've already heard back from the Priaulx Library that there are NO marriages between a Halford and a Marguerite in Guernsey. We did have such high hopes, too!
I should have added that the couple appear at the same address in 1918/1919/1920 Ann PS By the way - have you seen the photograph at http:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:William_John_Halford_and_Family.jpg I suspect you have, but if not, it is rather nice and might give you another contact (although I have no idea how you contact the contributor!)
