Once the dam wall has been broken the water flows freely. I'm sure that now other avenues will appear and someone will very soon come up trumps. Fantastic work everyone, I've been watching with bated breath.
I read on familysearch that St John's stood within the civil parish boundary of St Anne's. So, I have emailed the rector of St Anne's to see if they might have one!
There is an excellent page on Facebook called Old photos of London and the East End which has hundreds of photos and the very enticing "IF YOU WOULD LIKE ME TO FIND OLD PHOTOS OF ANY AREA IN LONDON...I WILL TRY MY VERY BEST TO FIND THEM..." so I have asked.....!
Thank you Patten-walsh I do hope that they can find one. So far everyone I have contacted (still waiting replies from a couple) agree that there has to be a picture somewhere but they do not have one. I am awaiting the picture, post bombing, which several archives also have but although there is the paper records it is the picture that eludes us all. I have a couple of new places to try but will leave mailing them until after the Christmas break.
Well I had a reply from Lambeth Palace Library - they do not have a picture either, but they have forwarded my message onto the ChurchCare Library (who I had on my to do in the New Year list)
Reply back from Old photos of London and the East End "Sorry, I've had no luck finding one" The search continues....
Well I have just recieved the copy of the bomb damaged Church - it is not a just pile of rubble but a whole church minus roof and windows. I have been back in touch with Tower Hamlets archives to see if I can post the picture online (thought I had better check copyright first), and they will get back to me, but I could not wait for that to tell you all. So if anyone wants to see 'Our Church', pm me an email addy and I will send it to you. I cannot thank everyone enough for all the help and encouragement you have given through this thread, I now have a wonderful early Christmas present. to you all.
I have heard back from the archive - who say they own the copyright of the image and want a fee (not huge - but a tidy sum) if I want to post it on here, which is a shame as so many of you have had a huge input into trying find a picture. I have declined, but the offer is open if anyone wants to see it privately.
That's a terrific photograph MollyMay. I love the way the architect has mirrored the steepness of the roofs in the top storey of the tower. It explains why the still image that Ann found looks a bit odd.
Well I messed that one up didn't I? lets do it again.. "Alone we can do so little, together we [can do] DID so much."
That's not your Dad's car parked there is it? Lovely photo thank you. Now if we could only hear from some one about that other wedding & church ?
