John Davies was baptised in Llanegwad, Camarthen on 25 November 1842 - s/o David and Eliza. There were 15 births registered just in the registration district of Camarthen in 1842 and of these 5 were in the July-Sept. q and 3 in the Oct.-Dec. q. so that means an expenditure 74GBP at least if I just concentrate on the last half of 1842.
Not being prepared to spend so much at 1st I looked the family in 1851, 1861 and 1871 census without success.

From information received from within my wife's family, John married Annabella Mainwaring in Camarthen St. Peter on 24 December 1871. His occupation was a Clerk in an Iron Foundry. I have the Mainwaring family in 1871 in Swansea - mother Lucy [a widow], dau. Charlotte [unm. occ. Dressmaker] and son John [unm. occ. Stone Mason]. No sign of Annabella. Her brother John was a witness.

After marriage they moved to Swansea and can be found as follows:
    1881 - RG11/5354/5/8 - 4 Martin Street - he age 39 and she 44 - Life Ass. Agent
    1891 - RG12/4576/79/27 - 73 Bailey St. Aberbaiden Breconshire - he age 49 and she 54 - Supt. Ass. Agent.
    1901 - RG13/5071/149/15 - 50 Morris St. Swansea - he age 59 and she 64 - Ins. Agent
    They had no children.

    2 possible deaths have been found - one age 62 - vol. 11a, page 533 - Swansea - Oct.-Dec. q. 1904 and another - age 63 - vol.11a, page 531 - Swansea - Apr.-Jun.q. 1905.

I have his widow in 1991 census as a lodger living with a family named Hicks - residence 278 Camarthen Road, Swansea. She died Jan.-Mar. q. 1933 - vol. 11a page 1452 - Swansea. She was 96.

Any help offered is appreciated as to how I can proceed in a more financially appropriate manner

You have enough info to apply to the GRO without a ref. no. and then fill in the parents detail on the page that then comes up. If they do not find a match you get a refund, it takes 3 weeks but it seems to me to be your best chance.

So let me see if I have this right - I place 8 separate orders at 9.25GBP each and quote the quarter in 1842 - the district Swansea - and the parents names
Debit my credit card for 74GBP and for each wrong one I'll get a full refund. Is that how it works?

    No Colin,
Go to the GRO site select birth certificate and enter the year (1842) then check the box NO for is the ref number known.
This opens a new page where you can enter the details that you know
ie surname, forename, dob if known, pob etc just go down the list and enter what you have.
You pay the one fee (£9.25) and the GRO do a search 1 year either side of the nominated year and look for a match. If they find it they send the cert, if not you get an email and a refund, but it usually takes 3 weeks.
