I would like to start 2015 on the 'right foot' with a logical Family History thread - involving John Ackerman and Ann Bowring. They were married in Bridport, Dorset on 30 October 1768.

This couple are my 6X great-grand Uncle and his spouse.

I am aware that others [as well as myself] are researching Ackerman's however I don't believe this family has been addressed as yet. If I am incoreect, please point me in the right direction.
If I am correct - I will post.

    Happy new year, Colin. :)

The easiest way to check is to throw a key word into the search box. I did this with BOWRING - and just two posts came up: this one and one that Mugwort posted about Hubert BOWRING.
Looks like you are fair to go! :D

    A minor correction - they are 5X not 6X great - grands.

John was baptised 27 March 1749 - son of John and Jane - Bridport
Ann was baptised 1 January 1747 - base-born dau. of Ann - Bridport.

They had - so far as I have found - based upon found baptisms - 9 children between the time of their marriage and the last found baptism - dated 15 September 1779.

For Ann there are at least 29 trees on A - 2 mention Powerstock burials 1831 [with sources], 3 have nothing re her death and 24 have her burial in Netherbury [with no sources]. The Powerstock burial 2 December 1831 gives her age as 86 [born c. 1745], which is consistent with her age at baptism on 1 January 1747 - 1 year old.

Am I wise to say this is my Ann? or is there another way to confirm?

I am also trying to find the death and burial of John Ackerman.

There are 17 trees on A for him and none have a death. I have found a burial a burial - just the one - in Bridport - 16 March 1806, however this indicates that the deceased was an Infant.

I can't seem to find anything else remotely close.

It always bothers me when I see trees with no sources. It may be that the tree owner does have the sources but has not posted them - or... they have just blindly copied other trees.
That looks better - at least there are sources for you to check. Also, whilst Netherbury is over 5 miles from Bridport, Powerstock is closer - just over 4 miles.
Have you checked to see if there is a will anywhere for him?

I am reasonably satisfied that I have the right death and burial for Ann - it is John's that concerns me moreso.

I cannot find a trace of a will nor did I find anything reaonably close in 1841 census.

These blankety-blank trees are enough to make me unwell.

I have determined that Ann Bowring was the base-born dau. of Ann Bowring and was baptised 1 January 1747 at age +1 year old in Bridport, Dorset. Exactly who the mother - Ann Bowring - was is a mystery and so is her place of birth and baptism. I have also never been able to establish a burial for her mother or even a possible marriage.

As far as I can determine, Ann Bowring married John Ackerman in Bridport on 30 October 1768. They proceeded to baptise and in one instance bury an infant, the following children:
John - 20 August 1769 and buried 29 August 1769 - nboth events in Bridport
    Jane - 5 November 1770 in Bridport
    John - 11 September 1773 in Bridport
    Fanny - 30 November 1774 in Bridport
    Sarah - 9 January 1776 in Bridport
    Susanna - 6 July 1777 in Bridport
William Jolliff - 19 July 1778 in Bridport
    Mary - 15 September 1779 in Bridport.

The father - John Ackerman - was baptised [the 3rd of 4 children] on 27 March 1749 in Bridport. I have not been able to establish a burial for him.
When I searched for a burial for Ann, the one that 'jumped' out at me was this one:
    Anne Akerman - birth year abt 1786 - age 86 - burial date 2 December 1831 - Powerstock.
I have now rechecked the original and it seems that maybe the age is wrong - I hope someone can check and verify for me.

At the outset of this post, I mentioned that public trees had got my dander up and here is why:
A tree owner and myself agree that John Ackerman and Jane Travis were married in Askerswell, Dorset on 3 December 1743.
We also agree that Jane was buried in Bridport 10 February 1790.
The tree owner claims a burial for John on 18 February 1779 in Bridport - but no burial record is attached.
A 2nd tree owner has also become involved with John and Jane Travis:
She has John born about 1722 in Bridport - no baptism so therefore no source
She has Jane dying in Askerswell 1743 - this was actually the year they married.
We agree on the marriage of John and Ann Bowring but then she has his death in Bridport in 1793 - source is the marriage of John and Jane Travis.
Of the 9 children I have found, she only has 3:
Jane [1770], William Jolliff [1778] and Mary [1779]
    and has added
    Edward 1769 - no source.
    Ann 1774 - no source.

If you think this is confusing - wait until tomorrow, when I detail what other tree owners - upwards of 28 in total - have to say about my Ann Ackerman and John Keech.

I only look at other trees for guidance and ignore them if there is no source

    Colin,

There is a burial at Bridport on 12 February 1818 for a John ACKERMAN, aged 86 (source NBI) but that gives a birthdate of c1732. I cannot find a burial at Bridport which gives a birthdate c1749. FMP has the burial in 1779 (source Dorset Burials) which is probably where the Tree Owner obtained the information, but of course there is no age shown. However, perhaps it was "assumed", as there were no other children baptised to John & Ann post September 1779, and that there was a burial for a John ACKERMAN in 1779, that this was his burial.

Quite possibly, Janet, the burial of the 86 year old John Ackerman on 12 February 1818 is connected to the the John son of Henry and Susannah baptised 27 January 1732. Whether this fits into my tree, I don't know. The furthest back I have got is for a Jacob Ackerman born about 1694 in Bridport [so I have been told] but have been unable to find a baptism in order to name his parents. This Jacob married Martha Gudge 30 September 1717 in Bridport. They baptised 3 children - Joseph [25 Dec. 1717], Elizabeth [10 Apr. 1720] and John [25 Apr. 1723]. Martha was buried in Bridport, 7 April 1727. He then married Ann Munden in Bridport 31 July 1728. I have not found any children baptised for this couple. Ann was buried in Bridport 14 July 1776 and Jacob was buried in Bridport 7 July 1778.
So whether there is a connection between Jacob and Henry I don't know.

Working with the burial you found on FMP for 1779, this would make John aged about 30 when he died - based upon date of baptism 27 March 1749. There were 8 children baptised between 20 August 1769 and 15 September 1779, with 7 alive alive as of the end of September 1779, which is the purported death of John. Ann would have been aged 33-34 with 7 children under the age of 10, so in all likelihood she would need some kind of support - workhouse or remarriage. I have not found a remarriage and as for the workhouse - where do I turn? I have what I suspect is the burial of Ann on 2 December 1831 in Powerstock, Dorset [aged 86?]
For the moment I have discounted the burial from FMP but maybe there is an alternative.

Looking at my messages sent on Ancestry about contacts with tree owners all I can say is I look for the tree with the most sources in order to make contact. If there are 2 dozen or more 'contact persons' for one tree - what should I do - contact each tree owner and then hold my breath? I think i'd turn blue.

I look for the sources too but if something looks promising I'll do a search and/ or yes try and make contact. Luckily? there are not of people following the same trees so it does make searching easier

Have you thought of looking for any Wills, Colin? Looking at Ancestry Extracted Probate records, there are 6 ACKERMAN/AKERMAN of Bridport Wills, the earliest being that of a Joseph AKERMAN dated 1698. Unfortunately, the only 2 actual PCC Wills available to read on Ancestry are those of a Henry AKERMAN of Bridport proved in 1613 and an Abraham ACKERMAN of Bridport proved in 1791. The one of Henry proved in 1613 might be useful to you if you can get further back, let me know if you need details, but there is nothing in between to help you.
