Woohoo, someone looks at my site Hi Paul. I take it you will be visiting Dolau too. I can give directions from there. From Dolau to the Chaple is just over 11 miles and takes about 22 mins. There is a quicker rout but the road is almost a track and not sure how easy it would be to pass someone coming the other way. Also it seems to pass through several farms. Take the A488 Knighton Road from Dolau, through Bleddfa to Monaughty, turn left at Manaughty onto the B4356. Stay on that road and it will bring you to Llangunllo. Travel on through Llangunllo, staying on the B4356 for a further 1.9 miles. The Chapel is on the right. Dolau to Bleddfa 4.4 miles Bleddfa to Monauty 2.5 miles Monauty to Llangunllo 2.4 miles Llangunllo to Chapel 1.9 miles If you are coming from another direction let me know and I will try giving directions from there.
I took myself on a little cyber drive along Llanbister Road from the railway overpass. It is a very narrow road but didn't get too far along and turned around with a very tight 3 point turn and went back the other way. Lots of farmhouses and lots of very cold looking sheep, but it was most enjoyable with very pretty countryside. An enjoyable day Wales looks to be quite lovely.

I stumbled upon this site looking for Gravel Chapel, and was impressed enough to sign up, after taking the trip in the google car! I have a memorial card, which belonged to my grandmother, and, I imagine, to her mother before her: Mary Evans, for one James Henry Evans, who died at the age of 18 months in February 1877, and is buried there. Could he have been Mary’s brother? His parents were John and Elizabeth Evans of Brandy House, near Knighton, which I believe is a camp-site now. Isn’t it amazing what you can find out, without having to resort to Ancestry.com! I’d no idea they were baptists, for a start. I wonder, do you have any information on the Evans (I know!) family from Knighton? My great grandmother, Mary married Thomas John Till from Otterton in Devon, and they moved to Tideswell in Derbyshire, then later, to Buxton, where my grandmother grew up.
Is that the Thomas John Till who married Mary Evans in the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel in Bakewell in 1894 ? JAMES HENRY EVANS had a mother with the maiden name PRICE. His birth was registered in KNIGHTON in 1875 GRO Reference: 1875 D Quarter in KNIGHTON Volume 11B Page 151 Now, on the 1871 census Mary had a brother named Amos. Amos was born at Brandy House Knighton, in 1868. AMOS EVANS also had a mother with the maiden name PRICE. His birth was registered in Knighton in 1868 GRO Reference: 1868 J Quarter in KNIGHTON Volume 11B Page 181 So looks Line JAMES was a brother to AMOS and also a brother to MARY, but I can't find a birth for MARY. On the 1861 census Firley Clayes, Llangunllo Above, Knighton Elizabeth gives her place of birth as Llanbister. Llanbister falls within the Knighton registration district. Were John Evans and Elizabeth Price married in the Knighton District in 1857? Children (all have the mother's maiden name as PRICE) Ann, Llangunllo, 1858 (can't find a birth) Margaret, Llangunllo, 1859 J Quarter in KNIGHTON Volume 11B Page 196 Edwin, Llangunllo, 1860 D Quarter in KNIGHTON Volume 11B Page 167 Eliza (Liza), Llangunllo, 1862 D Quarter in KNIGHTON Volume 11B Page 167 Mary, Llangunllo, 1866 (can't find a birth) Amos, Brandy House, 1868 J Quarter in KNIGHTON Volume 11B Page 181 Martha, Brandy House, 1870 M Quarter in KNIGHTON Volume 11B Page 170 James Henry, Brandy House, 1875 D Quarter in KNIGHTON Volume 11B Page 151 If you don't have an Edwin in your tree, there is a death for an Edwin Evans in Knighton district in 1862. He is aged 1, but as the GRO don't put months he could be 1 year 11 months and 3 weeks for all we know.
That’s brilliant! Thank you; it fills in a few holes. I have a death for Mary Till: Chapel-en-leFrith (Derbyshire) 1925 Apr – Jun, at the age of 54, so that could explain why you can’t find a birth for 1866. The Bakewell marriage is correct (my grandmother was born in 1894, bah!), and had two siblings: Victor and Isabel, both of whom died in tragic (but, no doubt, commonplace in those days) circumstances. She subtracted 5 or 6 years from her age, when she married my grandfather, another common practice, I imagine, as men were in very short supply after the war. Baptists and Methodists, eh? Who’d ‘a’ thunk it!
Really it doesn't mean that she wasn't born in 1866. There are many reasons that she can't be found. She was registered in another district, Ludlow, Presteigne, Llandrindod Wells, They may have registered her when they went off shopping, not necessarily Knighton. They may have registered her with a different first name but then called her Mary after registration. She may not have been registered. A mistake may have been made on the maiden name of her mother, instead of putting Price she may have said Evans. Records for Baptists and Methodists are notoriously hard to find for this area on-line. I've looked through the papers but the family must have behaved themselves as there is no mention of them. Cwmgilla, where Brandy House is, is just outside town (Knighton) it's a farming area, more a case of dotted houses than a village or hamlet.

Yes, I have those details, thank you (wonderful names), as well as the memorial card for little Isabel Mary Gwendoline, who died aged 3, after contracting measles. Poor Victor fell off a roof and broke his back. In those days, not much could be done, and after lingering for a few years, in hospital, and later in a bath-chair, he too died. Their mother, Mary was a nursing sister at the Devonshire in Buxton; I have a glass-plate negative of her with recuperating soldiers, which I have managed to get a digital image of, using a home-made light box, and a little Picasa trickery! By the way, how do I get a pic into that little green box?
