Sarah Hitchman was transported for life after her death sentence was commuted. She was tried at The Old Bailey in 1824 and arrived on the Grenada in 1825. Convict details say she was from London and was a servant. I believe she was the Sarah Ann Hitchman baptised to Matthew and Sarah Hitchman at St Mary-le-Bone in 1804. I have found siblings Mathew 1806 and Matthias 1806, (I feel these are one and the same) William 1802, Eleanor 1810, Jane 1808 and Anne 1813. All baptised to Matthew and Sarah at St Mary-le-Bone. Family Search only. I would love to find a marriage for Matthew Hitchman and Sarah ??. Any one out there able to help? Please!!!
No marriage yet but I've come across a baptism for a Mathew Hitchman in 1773,middlesex, son of Richard and Mary
Woo Hoo. Thank you. So if father Matthew and his sister Martha were twins then maybe, just maybe, the baptisms on Family Search of Matthew and Matthias, 1806 could be twins as well......How good would that be! Providing of course that they are who/whom I am after.....
I don't think they are baptisms for the same child, AM. They were baptised on the same day and entered in the register one under the other. Perhaps twins!!!
Crossed posts with you, AM. The baptisms for Matthias and Matthew don't state twins, but..........?????? The baptisms for Matthew and Martha do say TWINS
First ones I have come across in the family, again, if they're mine, of course. We only have ours one at a time. So I thought anyway.
There's burial records for a Matthew and a Matthias both St Marylebone. Matthias Sep 1806, no age given but has 'ch' after his name, child perhaps? Matthew 14 Dec 1806 also has 'ch' after his name.
Just to let you know what I have searched at: https:// archive.org Marriage registers of St Mary le Bone 1688-1812 Didn't find marriage of Matthew Hitchman and Sarah ? just found an Ann Hitchman and a Rob Hitchman, both earlier than your couple would have married. Will keep looking around.
Sarah Hitchman was married to another convict as Sarah Hatchman, if that helps. But it won't because he was Richard Burnett, with permission to marry under the name of James Burnett and married as James Barnett but known as James Bennett I will try to go where others have failed!!!!!!!
Richard Burnett was transported on the Marquis of Huntley in 1826. Permission to marry on NSW State Records has James Burnett per Marquis of Hastings applying to marry Sarah Hitchman. There was no James Burnett on the Marquis of Hastings. I'll figure it out before I leave this mortal coil...or else. On Jen Willetts site, Free Settler or Felon there is a Richard Burnett and a James Burnett per Marquis of Huntley but it was one or the other, not both. I think. Oh gosh I don't know
AM - have you read the report of Sarah's trial? http://www. oldbaileyonline.org/browse.jsp?id=t18230910-53-defend636&div=t18230910-53#highlight Just wondered if you noticed that one of the people she stole from was a Thomas Church, who claimed he was her cousin. Might be worth seeing if the name Church helps.......probably a false lead, but you never know. Apologies, if you have already been there In a newspaper report of the trial from the Public Ledger and Daily Advertiser (which hasn't more detail than the Old Bailey report) it does say "Witnesses were called, who gave the prisoner a character, upon a knowledge of several years; her family were highly respectable." Again, not much use but at least she supposedly came from a 'good' family Ann
