Sound advice all round Lizzy, although I am of the same breed as some of the others here (you know who you are ) and tend to play down things for myself and shout loud when it is other people....

Do chase up the hospital even if it means contacting several people. I do think that hospital administrators live on a different planet from the rest of the hospital staff, which is a shame as it makes everyone look incompetent. Also ask your GP that to chase up the results again if he/she still hasn't had a reply.

You'll get there, but it's a b....y great shame that you have to jump through hoops to do so.

I just read an article that says men get treated faster than women. Seems doctor's tend to believe them more when they say they are in pain. I don't understand this thought on the part of doctors. Most women have a great tolerance of pain ( after all, childbirth is painful ) and like so many people have said, they put off taking care of themselves because others come first and they don't want to appear to be a bother. I know its true for me.

It's only because us men keep it all inside and say nothing till (well you know)

Not saying that you women don't do the same. But it is a known fact that men don't say anything until it is as they say too late.

My son nearly died because of that very attitude when he was 12years old.

He had been laying on the settee for an hour two, when we asked him what was wrong "I've got a bit of a stomach ache", we asked him if it hurt much he said "no just a bit". By mid afternoon when nothing we did seemed to help we took him to the doctors, next thing he's in an ambulance on his way to hospital with Peritonitis, doctors gave him a 50/50 chance of survival. We nearly didn't make our emigration out here on time, it was touch and go, as we were coming out by ship the doctors announced him just fit enough to travel. As it was he came out with a Drain still in place and a requirement to have check ups by the ship's Doctor, didn't slow him down on the trip at all though. :)

Worst decision ever Mealymoo, never put your "health issues on the back burner". You have a husband who no doubt would be absolutely devastated if, God forbid, he lost you (been there) and don't forget that a grandmother is an essential part of a grandchild's life.

So give your husband free rein to apply his boot to whatever medico's butt is needing it.

Sorry to be jack blunt but I think it needs to be said. :)

    Regards.

Sadly, how very, very true. A neighbour's son needed a raft of specialised tests at a hospital over 20 miles away after he developed epilepsy, and as the lad is autistic he needed sedation both for the journey and the tests. The prescribed dose was too small but a further dose could not be given as neither of the unit's 2 Consultants were on site and the examination had to be aborted. That was months ago, and the neighbour is still trying to get a new appointment, and her GP is still trying to obtain a report from the fiasco.

Chimp we do sympathize, we really do. In recorded history humanity has survived the plague in various forms, smallpox epidemics, Spanish flu, galloping consumption and probably many others (names elude at the moment), but not once in the history of mankind - until now - has an award been created for those who survive the worst affliction of all - man flu.

Mealymoo, I am so sorry you have been going through all this, and have every sympathy with you in that all dealings with the medics etc. seem to be so slow.

I understand what you are going through, (although I am not in your place) as my husband has AF and it took a year before he had the `paddle' (shock to re-start his heart in a normal beat. It didn't work, but just before he was about to have another another go, many months later, he tripped over in the town and fell flat on his chest. He cut his nose, but apart from that he was ok. He had been scheduled to have another go with the `paddle' but when they did an ECG at the pre.op his heart was working normally! They thought it had probably slipped back with the medication, but we are confident that he did it himself by having that fall. He was fine for nearly 9 months, and then sadly it dropped back again. Now he has again joined the queue for treatment but as yet we have no idea what it will be. As you have found....nothing moves quickly, but please push hard to get whatever treatment you need, don't worry that you are being a nuisance.....that is the only way to get what you need. Hubby has at last got an appointment he has waited for since three months ago. That is by pushing!! Good Luck!

    As reported in The Independent:

There is such a thing as man flu, with men less resistant to pneumonia and other respiratory illnesses, according to new research.

Scientists from Harvard University have discovered that the female sex hormone oestrogen fortifies the immune system, and men are suffering for its absence.

See, as I always knew, Chimp is not a wimp. :p

Glen, hope things work out well for hubby. My hubby had AF and it was only thanks to his work health insurance that we got it sorted a lough the doctor had him in medication for a few years first. Unfortunately he did have to undergo keyhole surgery (twice) but the second op was nearly five years ago now and, touch wood, he seems to be ok. Occasionally he doesn't feel right but I reckon he's after sympathy:D. You keep pushing the docs, make a real nuisance of yourself.

Moo, I hope things look up for you too. Just remember girls we are all here thinking of you, wishing you (or your families) well and we have broad shoulders to listen to any rants. So take care.

Ooh and Chimpy you have my hubby's sympathies:)

Thank you Mealymoo and LianeH. I'm sorry if I crashed your thread Moo, but I was really trying to support you in `pushing' for what you want and need, rather than wait for someone to `wake up' to the fact that you need help. Glad your hubby is better Liane, lets hope it continues. :)

Glen, of course you didn't crash my thread, I realised exactly why you posted and it's most kind of you to relate yours and your husband's experience and how asserting oneself can get a result. I truly appreciate it :).

Pleased your husband is doing well, Liane, long may it continue :)
