Thank you BLH, I've been waiting for you to be able to get back to post. I am confused, nothing new, but will try and go over this latest post. I do see your dilemma... but I'm sure now that we know a little more the experts on here might be able to find something more. I just hope they can get back on before too long. Good stuff. Thanks.
Strange. Although I can only access census on FamilySearch, the 1891 has John Waddington with his brother Francis and family and his wife Caroline and one child Elvina 6 months at St Johns West Ham. Where is Cordelia? 1901 census has him again with wife Caroline and only Elvina age 10 at Willesden Middlesex. No other children. So where is Cordelia? 1911 census I can't access details (FMP) but I believe you mentioned just one daughter. Elvina?
I wonder if it was his Mother [with glass of bevvie] who was pictured sitting behind Hugh as he posed with a hat he was seemingly constructing..depicted in one of the newspaper photos.

Welcome Mellanie You have no idea how 'obsessed' some of us became with this man! So pleased for BLH that you found this amazing forum
And welcome from me too Mellanie - we certainly had fun hunting down 'Hugh' so thanks for the answers you are providing
Thank you for your welcome it's great for me too I'm proud to have such unconventional family Cordelia was a strong woman and dident follow the crowd and nor did Hugh beresford and both very talented
Hello all, I haven't been around for a while as Hugh (John) was taking over my life, eventually I tracked down Hugh's brother Alan and we are in contact. My vague childhood memories and my family tree are now coming together. It is a very interesting family that so far have traced 1300's. Thanks to everyone for your assistance , you can all sleep once again and dream of Hats.
Hi Mellanie Yes I am Brenda, after a lot of ground work I found Alan and we have been in touch. Hugh is my uncle and your mother will be my 1st cousin. Records list your mother's birth cert as Desby, I have just asked Alan if that was correct as such an unusual name. I'll send a private message with my contact details. What a turn up.
Well done Mellanie and Brenda. Great to see a family reunited on this forum. Don't forget we are here for any more queries you may both have. Congratulations on finding each other.
