I'm starting a new thread because although this is linked to my "Roberts or Brooke?" thread, it's really a whole new family. I've been sucked in...

Charlotte Marriott Rance was born 1822 at St Luke, London to Thomas Francis Rance and Ann Eldridge. She is with them at St Luke in 1841

In 1844 she married Henry James, in Broadwater by Worthing, Sussex for some reason
    His father was John James

In 1851 she was with her sister Mary at uncle William Brooke Robert's house in Maidstone. She was married, but he was not there. Both sisters were annuitants. I cannot find a definite sighting of her after this.

Henry was, I think, in St Luke, London born 1817 St Luke Old Street, a GP. He is with his father John 66, mother Hester 59, and siblings.

in 1861 and 1871 he is in Weybridge, Surrey, with family, a surgeon, married but no wife.

In 1880 if I'm right he marries Katherine M MacDonald in Ramsgate, but its only under select marriages so I don't know if he was a widower. They are living in Ramsgate in 1881 and Brighton in 1891.

So my question is: is this all the same person, and what happened to Charlotte?

Are you sure he was a surgeon?
The Law Times 1844 17th August page 390 Volume 3:
James, Henry esq. Secondary of London and of Worthing to Charlotte Marriott second daughter of the late Thomas F Rance, esq on the 10th inst. at Broadwater Church Sussex.
    A gentleman's magazine 1844 page 423:
At Broadwater, Sussex, Henry third son of John James to Charlotte Marriot, second daughter of the late Thomas F Rance esq.

In 1851 his father was a secondary (is that a legal thing?) and he was a GP at that point. That notice seems to confirm I'm on the right track, and explains why they married in Worthing. I didn't know he had 2 older brothers though

To be honest I have no idea what a secondary is. Just that it was in a law magazine!
Come to think of it. Does the Secondary do all the run around work? Law clerk? Still studying? Junior lawyer? Who knows!

I think a 'secondary' was an articled clerk in a law office or court. Maybe!:nailbiting::reading:

Ooh that's good, she's with her sister Mary again. The don't half move about the country! I guess she didn't get on with Henry.

Hope to heaven I haven't missed something else......but will tell you anyway that I have found an obit for Thomas Francis Rance in the Gentleman's magazine 1843.
June 29 Aged 55, Thomas Francis Rance esq of the City Road. Many years surgeon to the City of London Lying in Hospital and to the parochial infirmary of St Luke.
I was also wondering where the name 'Marriott' had come from then found just a small snippet in the index of the London Gazette Vol 1 1845 'Thomas Francis Rance (Rance and others) v Marriott and others...page 295.
This is after Thomas Francis death so may have something to do with winding up his affairs.

Maybe this is the connection to Charlotte Marriott Rance's name.!!!!!!
'Thomas Marriott (1786-1852). British philanthropist, was born in Hoxton Square, London. He was the son of Methodist philanthropist William Marriott. One of his earliest memories is that of seeing John Wesley in his coffin. Marriott married Charlotte Emelie Instell Rance in 1808. Marriott built an extensive library and Methodist memorabilia collection. Upon his death in 1852, he left 10,000 pounds to the Wesleyan Missionary Society and the rest of his estate to support the Worn-Out Preachers Fund.'

Thomas Francis Rance's will is on Ancestry. Thomas Marriott and Walter Griffith were the executors.
