In 1938 my Grandfather was a DSI in Brighton, Sussex Police. One of his most high profile cases was the Brighton trunk murder. I am interested in obtaining information on his career, any advice on how to find this would be greatly appreciated. His name is Arthur Newman Pelling born 1888

Thanks for the link I will give it a go. I have him on the census records upto 1911 but, this was before he joined the police.

The report you mention is on FMP briefly in Daily Mirror 3 August 1943 among others. Also the report of one Arthur Pelling who along with another pte. are pictured in: Daily Mirror 20 May 1918-Wounded soldier's plucky rescue. Sapper Arthur Pelling, R.E. & Pte.Norman Jacobson-Lonedon Reg't. jumped into the sea at Brighton in their blue "invalids" & rescued a boy aged 7yrs. pictured with the lad who was drowning - Bert Heasman & Cyril Mahoney 13 who tried to save him. It may be worth your trying to obtain a monthly sub to FMP or British Newspapers. You are probably aware of his marriage in 1923- found on FreeBMD along with two children. The dtr is shown in 1939 but the son being too young is blanked out. Res. 5 Spring St.
There are lots of reports in the papers which mention your grandfather and the role he played in various cases. The best way to access them is if you take out a sub to a site such as the British Newspaper Archive or Find My Past and when you are searching, the best search term to use is Detective Superintendent Pelling rather than Arthur Newman Pelling, as most policemen were referred to by their rank rather than their Christian names
