I have an Albert Richard Hallums B 12 May 1816, Upnor Kent, (christian name records sometimes show Helbert.) was in the Merchant Navy there are records of his voyages up to 1847 - He married Margaret Catto B 1816 in Edinburgh 1850, then disappears, cannot locate a death record. Margaret may have remarried. Can anyone assist please.
There's a Mates Certificate of Service dated 1851 on Ancestry for 23 years as a Appl Seaman & Mate in the British Merchant Service in the Foreign & Coasting Trade. There's also the claim for a Certificate of Service which states his actual service from 1838.
Hi Sis, Thanks for offering to email the above certs, but I already copies of the above plus Albert's discharge from the Dreadnaught Seamans Hospital and Scottish Marriage cert. What I cannot locate is any death record . Although there is a marriage record for a Margaret Catto with a chap called Shanks, I don't think this is a remarriage as the dates don't fit, but the parents are of the same name. If Margaret didn't remarry then both Albert and Margaret seems to have disappeared after 1850
Albert Richard & Margaret HALLUM are in the 1851 census of Aberdeen. They are living at 21 James Street, Aberdeen, where he is shown as aged 33 and a Merchant Seaman. Margaret is shown as aged 23 born Newburgh, so born c1828 according to the census record. But then, like you, I can find no trace of either of them whatsoever at the moment. Will keep searching though. Janet
There is a marriage of a Margaret CATTO and John McPHERSON on 21st September 1855 in Aberdeen where Margaret is recorded as "widow, second marriage". (Note: Scottish marriages record either maiden name or previous married name... ) Family Search has this couple as the parents of a John McPHERSON who was born on 2nd December 1866. Margaret is recorded with a surname of "CATTO or HALLUMS". From this, I surmise that Albert died some time between 1851 (where @janetbooth found them in the census) and 1855, when Margaret remarried.
Note: Civil registration in Scotland did not start until 1st January 1855, so it may well be a case of searching Parish Records. Margaret and John married in the parish of St Nicholas, Aberdeen.
In 1861, Margaret and John have a son, Alexander aged 4 and are living in Sugar House Lane, St Nicholas, Aberdeen where John is a Merchant Seaman.
This seems a likely event. I didn't realise the Scottish system recorded either maiden or previous names. Can I ask which search program you used, having now found the linked marriage on Ancestry there is no indication that this is a second marriage for Margaret, same with Family Search. I have found at least four children to this marriage. I did a search of the Parish records on Ancestry but nothing re Albert's death, could be not all the Scottish records a available.
I expect Daft Bat found the information on Scotlands People (a pay per view site where you have to buy credits to see the actual records, though searching, I think, is free). Just Google Scotlands People. I can't do a link as it is pay per view, though I'm sure some person cleverer than me will be able to do a "broken link"
Well found, Jan, and I have now learned something new as well! I too searched on Scottish People but under the surname of HALLUM(S). Janet
