I have a child who was born in 1897 and whose mother's name I know, she was single at the time. He is in the 1891 census with the in laws of his Uncle (mother's brother) and shown as adopted. I know that official adoption wasn't in play at this time, but what I'm not sure of is how to put him in my tree. Any thoughts and ideas welcomed please.

I would show the mother as biological mother and the in laws of his Uncle as adoptive parents. Even though there was no official adoption at the time he was adopted by intent in my view.

In Family Historian I can put first or 2nd marriages etc, so I would put him in with his mother as a new family and put father unknown and then add a note as to what happened with him -unofficially adopted etc.

Thank you very much Doug and Genie. I've got it like Genie says, but I rather think the Doug said is probably the way to go. Just got to work out how to in my genealogical software.

    Still open to other ideas!:)

It's amazing, you can't think of a way to do something, you put out here on TD, someone comes up with a solution and you discover it was easy really.:D
