In1881 Herbert Watts Davies, son, aged 16, born Somerset, was recorded in the household of Richard and Mary Davies, Ystradyfodwg. ( RG11. Piece/ folio 5301/34. Page 18).

    Richard Davies, b1835, Swansea, married Mary Llewellyn, born 1836, Merthyr Tydfil, in June 1856, Merthyr Tydfil. Their known children - Elizabeth, b 1859 Dowlais/Merthyr. ( not traced in 1881), Sarah Anne, b 1865 Aberdare/Merthyr, Rees, b 1867, Aberdare/Merthyr, Jane, b 1871, Ystradyfodwg.

    Also in household in 1881.
Benjamin D Jones, grandson. Registered as Benjamin Jones Davies, 1876, Pontypridd.
Jane Rees, mother-in-law. Born Jennet Davies/David circa 1815, Brecknockshire. Married (1) Jenkin Llewellyn (2) John Rees.

Who was Herbert Someone, born Somewhere, perhaps 1865? I can find no census nor BMD record that seems to match this one reference. Any suggestions will greatly appreciated.

Well I am stumped too :headbang:

No Herbert Watt or Herbert Davi[e]s born in Somerset 1865+/- 2 years.

All I can think he was an adopted child, but I cannot find him before 1881

I spent a couple of hours on this too but found nothing positive, I did notice that one of the daughters in the 1881 census was the same age as the boy Herbert

Could this have been an earlier marriage?
    Name: Herbert Davies
    Gender: Male
    Marital status: Single
    Marriage Date: 19 Feb 1849
Marriage Place: Bedminster, St John, Somersetshire, England
    Father: Herbert Davies
    Spouse: Mary Trewartha

or an adoptee by Richard & Mary?

I wrote this yesterday before I decided it was incorrect & thought I'd extinguished it. had to leave computer so many times I forgot to check back. Didn't remember how to wipe the board this morning so here it still is.
My notepad notes have gone into the ether so I remember only that the same named Herbert Watt was on a few more times in Ancestry but I think over seas maybe USA

I think he was Herbert William.

Whilst I accept there may have been some cross migration between the South Wales and North Somerset coal fields, I am not convinced that Somerset was HWD's place of birth. I am also intrigued why he should have been listed between a grand son and mother-in-law, both on whom are one step removed from Richard, head of household. Clearly he was somebody's son, but whose? I am also sceptical that he was registered as a Davies at birth - Benjamin was not.

And with nothing near a match in 1871 and 1891 I think this is likely to remain one of life's mysteries.

The nearest birth reg I could come up with was Herbert John Hill Watts
    June qtr 1864 Taunton 5c456
Looking for the mmn on the GRO index he appears as Henry

but the image from FreeBMD clearly shows Herbert

Does the name Hill mean anything to you?

This is why I find those typed up copies so annoying. Just as many errors as transcriptions from images but we cannot see the original image to be sure who is correct.
