If you copy and paste the following into your browser, it will take you through to the website. http://www. photolondon.org.uk/pages/details.asp?pid=7418 Then of course, consideration needs to be given that these items were from the previous decade but are still in use in the early 1880s.
Based on what Huncamunca has found it would certainly appear the photograph is more likely to be mid to late 1870s. Well found.
so to sum up .......possibly Royal Artillery around mid 1870,s could be territorial or Militia..........well thanks that's more than I had before something to go on for more search thanks again
I think there is little or no doubt that the soldier is a member of the Royal Artillery circa 1875-80, the only question being, is he a regular, a volunteer, or a member of the militia (he cannot be a territorial as the TA did not then exist).
thanks euryalus..........didn't realise TA wasn't around at least that's one less area to look for! Talking of areas see you are not far from me in Witney.
I think 1908 is generally regarded as the starting point of the territorial force - a product of the Haldane army reforms. Prior to that, the part-timers would have been volunteers, yeomanry or militia. I think the man in the picture at the start of the thread is in the Artillery Militia.
wow forgotten this thread and still haven't discovered who it is!! thanks Dave for reminding me will have another look through my tree see if anything turns up
think it is probably either RHA or RFA or RGA all have very similar untiforms shame we cant see badge clearly I found a RFA piccie I think looks similar it is an officer but see wht you think
I think that the RFA and RHA wore riding breeches, and the RGA wore normal trousers as they were not mounted troops
The background for the photograph is not a good guide, as this could well be a set up as mentioned or inside a studio/museum for effect
Unfortunately its all I got must admit does have a look of that but then most photos from that time were they didn't really go for spur of the moment too expensive,
Been having a look and can rule out Royal Horse Artillery, so that leaves us with Royal Field Artillery (Bigger Guns than RHA), Royal Artillery(Ammunition troops) and Royal Garrison Artillery(Really big guns and Naval Guns), I can't make out if there is a red stripe down the outside of the trousers, the Busby is no help as this was worn from around 1860 and was still being worn in the 1920's
Sandiep if you are on Facebook there is a Royal Artillery Museum Archive page ....might be worth asking on there....hope this is allowed
thanks Dave but facebook is something I don't have or want......prefer Top Dog for my chats I will have to go through the part of family that the photo album came from and see if I can find anyone in the military thanks everyone
Please do always grateful for another pair of eyes and any help I haven't found any military yet but of course not all records are out there and I am a little in the dark as to who
I've just uploaded a photo of my Maternal Uncle -a gunner with RGA- not a clear photo, but he seems to be wearing long boots rather than puttees. 1915.
Nice picture, in 1915 he would normally be wearing Puttee's but the picture is not clear enough to see if they are boots or Puttee's, these Puttee's are rapped from the ankle up to just below the knee for Infantry and from the knee down to the ankle for mounted troops (think that is the right way round)either way there is a difference in the rapping direction so can be an obvious pointer to Infantry or mounted
