I have been researching the family of Richard and Mary Hayman of Dorchester, Dorset. Richard seems to have been baptised 10 Mar 1784 at St Mary’s Beaminster, Dorset, his parents being John and Mary Hayman. Richard married Mary Smith 4 Jul 1809 at Bridport, Dorset, she was baptised 14 Apr 1790 at Bridport, her parents being William and Rebekah Smith. Richard, a coachman, died intestate on 25 Mar 1824, and was buried the next day at All Saints Dorchester, his age was given as 33 (not 40) on the burial record. A Letter of Administration on 8 May 1824 was ‘Granted to his widow Mary HAYMAN of Dorchester: Also bound with her are Charles AUSTIN of Dorchester a taylor and Thomas STROUD of Dorchester a Gentleman [Side note "Intestate died 25th March 1824] Also a statement from the Dorchester Banks had funds of £23-7-2d under name of Richard HERMAN’. Dorset Quarter Session Order Books ref QSM 1/15 detail and, I paraphrase, that Whimple Parish, Devon appealed the order for removal of Mary and her 8 children by Holy Trinity Dorchester, Dorset, the order was quashed with payment ordered to be paid by Holy Trinity Dorchester to Whimple Parish from the time of removal. Why was Whimple Parish in Devon involved? Was the family sent there, or go there of their own accord for some reason? To add even more interest it would seem that as a young child Richard’s father John also died, aged 44. He was buried at Beaminster on 12 May 1788 and on 2 Dec 1789 there is a Dorset Poor Law Settlement Order for the removal/settlement of Mary Hayman and her four children (including Richard aged 5 years), who had it was stated lately intruded themselves into the Parish of Beaminster, and that their last legal settlement place was Kilmington, Devon to which they should be removed. Why when all four children were baptised in Beaminster? The widow Mary Hayman, whose maiden name I have not discovered, then died Dec 1790 and was buried 11 Dec 1790 in Beaminster. Another Poor Law Settlement Order was issued re the four children on 30 Dec 1790 again stating they should be removed/settled at Kilmington. Again why when they were all baptised and presumably born at Beaminster?

Presumably following John's death Mary needed parish help to support the family. Since the father came from elsewhere the parish could insist they return to his 'place of origin' if they were not prepared to support them. It doesn't matter that the children or even the mother were born in Beaminster, it is totally dependant on the father/husband origins
This may be of interest, from the Exeter Flying Post of the 1st April 1824. On Wednesday night last, about 12 o'clock, as Richard Hayman was driving the Exeter and London Regulator Coach from Dorchester, on his passing Dawlish turnpike gate about 6 miles from Dorchester, the splinter bar of the coach, owing to the darkness of the night, struck against the turnpike gate post, by which he was thrown from his seat, his ribs broken, and he was so bruised, that he survived only 24 hours. Hayman, who, we understand bore an excellent character, has left a wife and eight children, and we are glad to find that his friends have come forward to assist them. It is a case truly worthy the consideration of the benevolent.
Yes I found that yesterday and four other children born to Hugh and Mary, whose maiden name I believe was Rendall.
Some additional findings. Richard's wife Mary was born to William and Rebekah Smith in 1790 at Bridport, Dorset and she was baptised there on 14 Apr 1790. Richard and Mary were married at Bridport on 4 Jul 1809. Mary gave birth to twins, William and Richard and they were baptised at St Mary's Bridport on 17 Oct 1809. Little William died in Jan 1811 and was buried on 29 Jan 181 at All Saints Dorchester. The other 7 children were all born and baptised at All Saints Dorchester. I have found John's marriage to Mary Thomas at Kilmington on 27 Apr 1769. Another Poor Law Settlement record has been discovered which is difficult to read but from which I take it that Hugh Hayman had some land at Kilmington. Also that when Hugh died John’s Uncle Joseph Rendall (of Hinton) took John to live with him as though he was his own child but John was not made his apprentice nor other legal arrangement made. (I presume that if there had John would be legally settled with Joseph at Hinton, wherever that is). I will attempt to post snippets of the examination record separately, perhaps some better eyes can help read it. This is how I determined that Hugh's wife, Mary’s maiden name was Rendall, and then found the 5 baptisms for children of Hugh and Mary one being named Richard Rendall Hayman. I have also found Hugh’s baptism on 17 Mar 1726 at Kilmington, parents Richard and Joane Hayman. Although I can now understand why Hugh's family were required to be removed to Kilmington after his death, I still can't figure out why Richard's family were required to be removed to Whimple.

I've made a stab at translating. I've done quite a few of these in the past and they are always full of odd abbreviations, missing words and almost random thoughts! Hopefully, this makes some sort of sense Who on her oath saith she was married to the s(ai)d John Hayman about 20 years since in the Parish Church of Kilmington in the County of Devon, that she have oftentimes heard her husband say he being? born and bred there that his father belonged to also and lived there belonged to the E. (?Ecclesiastical) Parish of Kilmington. That she have 4 Children by her s(ai)d Husband now living with her viz Sarah aged 12 years, John aged 11 years, Betsy aged 7 years and Richard aged 5 years. That after his Father’s Death he was seized of a Piece of Ground in Kilmington as his .…w(hi)ch now belongs to his eldest son but that her s(ai)d Husband has taken and signed the Day and never lived in Kilmington since his Father’s death Year first above before us Mary Hayman Dorset the Exam(inati)on of Mary Hayman Mother? of John Hayman …. taken on oath before us two of His Majesty’s Justices of the Peace ….. ….. 2nd Novr 1789 to wher(eb)y the last legal Settlem(en)t of her … son John Hayman. That her late Husband Hugh Hayman was seized of a Ground in s(ai)d P(aris)h of Kilmington at the time his son John lived with him there as part of his family and died seized of same w(hic)h on his Death descended to his s(ai)d son.
