I am now going to confuse matters further by throwing this lot into the mix. :D

Following this through (as the 1851 census states that William was born in Leyland) I had a rummage to see if I could find anything out about Ann.

There is a death for an Ann HESKETH in the March quarter of 1841, Chorley registration district (covering Leyland), which could account for no mother for William in 1841 census.*** She was aged just 17 and her burial took place on 17th January 1841 at St Peter, Mawdesley with Bispham.

*** Going back to the 1841 census, there is also a 15-month-old William HESKETH living with a Cotton Weaver in Leyland by the name of Thomas PARKINSON. Also in the house are Mary and Richard PARKINSON and a Thomas HEATON.

However.... the interesting thing is that next door is a family by the name of WILSON. ;)
    (Ref: HO107, piece 526, book 13, folio 35, page 15)

It would be worth checking to see if this family are connected to Richard and Betty ;)

Bearing in mind that the Chorley Union covered both Leyland and Mawdesley, it is feasible that Ann HESKETH gave birth to William in January(ish) 1840 at the Union hospital but died before the 1841 census, which is why he was placed with another family.

Oh yes - there is a baptism for an Ann HESKETH on 3rd June 1823 at St Michael and All Angels, Croston (just south west of Leyland) daughter of James and Ann. The family lived in Mawdesley, where James was a weaver.

Anyway, those are my thoughts on the matter. :)

I found Ann Hesketh's death last night and was about to post details when I got interrupted. I'd noted the other Hesketh child in the 1841 census too, but don't think I spotted the Wilsons next door - intriguing.

Another spanner for the works is the baptism of William Hesketh to single women Martha Hesketh, again at St Peter and St Paul, Ormskirk on 10/5/1840.
Interestingly Martha seems to have died and buried 9/7/1840 at St Pater and St Paul.
Does this Martha relate somehow to the marriage Hesketh/Wilson St Peter and St Paul in 1835.
Although I do note that your William is said to be born Leyland so perhaps......

William Hesketh was baptised, mother Ann Hesketh, single woman on 23/2/1840, St Andrew Leyland. Or do we have this?

Going back to the 'next door Wilsons' in 1841 #23, there is a baptism in Leyland for a John Wilson, 1812, father Richard. Haven't found him yet, but still working on the theory that Richard Wilson who married Betty Singleton was his brother.

Baptism: 15 Mar 1812 St Chad, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, England
John Wilson - son of John Wilson & Ellen
    Born: 18 Feb 1812
    Abode: Carlton
    Occupation: Cooper

This would go along with :-

Baptism: 16 Jul 1809 St Chad, Poulton-le-Fylde, Lancashire, England
Richard Wilson otherwise Whiteside - son of John Wilson otherwise Whiteside & Ellen
    Born: 7 Jul 1809
    Abode: Carleton
    Occupation: Cooper

Ellen and the 2 boys Richard and John are on the 1841 census as per #19

On the 1 Feb 1807 at St Chad Poulton Le Fylde, Richard Whiteside alias Garstang son of Richard Whiteside alias Garstang and Elleno_O

    WILSON/WHITESIDE:
30/10/1763 Ellen Benson marries Robert Whiteside at St Chad.
31/7/1767 Robert Whiteside buried at St Chad
4/5/1768 John Whiteside son of Ellen Whiteside baptised St Chad.....notes 'B' in margin.
15/11/1770 Richard Wilson yeoman marries Ellen Whiteside a widow St Chad.
But there is also a John Whiteside baptised father Robert Whiteside 23/9/1767 St Chad....so not sure where these Johns fit in.
