    re: Smith vs. Goldsmith -
I wonder if being Goldsmith sounded too ethnic for the time period (between the World Wars). Either too German, or even Jewish? Just "Smith" is simpler and more broadly acceptable for someone in business. Doesn't help with the search, just a passing thought. Interesting thread. ;)

That thought crossed my mind Barb, but why would Walter go down that road and not any of his siblings? Having said that, it could explain the supposed ‘rift’, with the rest of the family not being too happy at Walter disclaiming the family name.

The Goldsmiths came mainly from Sussex (I have them back to 1680 so far) and was a very popular name in the county. Having said that, I have yet to trace where the name originated. A Goldsmith from Sussex was even on the Titanic. :reading:

Has anyone checked the occupants of that address in 1911?
Maybe Sarah was living there then.
Isn’t the 1921 available to view?

    Apparently:

"The census, which was the first to be conducted following the introduction of the Census Act of 1920, will be published online by Findmypast in January 2022.":nailbiting:

Be interesting to see if they charge extra to view it like they do the 1939 Register.

OK, so not available until then...shame.
There is a substitute through The Genealogist and I was allowed a peak.
1 Walter Goldsmith, in Wandsworth and a W Goldsmith in Hampstead. That's as far as I was allowed so if anyone has a sub to The Genealogist then perhaps he might be there.

The 1921 substitute 'census' on The Genealogist is compiled from directories. The Walter Goldsmith in Wandsworth was living at 11 Eglantine Road, SW18 and W. Goldsmith was living at 84 West End Lane, Kilburn. No other clues as to occupation :(

Edited to add that Lancashire isn't covered, so I can't check Blackpool :sceptical:

I came across 1934 Directory of Blackpool amounderness.co.uk It lists MOST head of households or business. Only one Goldsmith appears and that is for Arthur M and no Sarah Smiths either. So I started going through each letter looking for that 49 Coleridge Road address. I gave up after B. :headbang:

Oh bless you @Archie's Mum ():-)

However, thank you for the link - I have found 2 Walter SMITHs listed: one is a Police Constable (so unlikely! ;) )but there is no occupation for the other. :(

Certainly worth a further rummage. :)

    Edited to add:

Just found the following as well:
SMITH Mrs. S., Park View Private Hotel, 7 Clifton Drive North. Tel. 45 ; Leicester private hotel, 3 and 5 Clifton Drive South. Tel. 45; Waverley private hotel, 27 Clifton Drive South. Tel. 45, and apartment house 39 Wood Street.

    Now, I wonder... :sceptical:

I've just started seeing what I can turn up in the papers. I've found a series of adverts throughout 1933 which read
    Lytham St Anne's
Leicester Pte. Hotel, 5, Clifton Drive S. nr. pier, ex. cuisine, sep. tables; terms 9/6 to 12/6 - Mrs Smith, prop.
Doesn't help much does it :sceptical:

Will get back to it a bit later.

FMP has electoral Rolls (in Census set, select electoral rolls from drop down)

I just entered 1929 +/- 10 years, place Lancashire and in 'optional keywords' put 49 Coleridge Road

    3 results:- 2 identical entries for 1929 & 1931- 49 Coleridge Road
    Rw Dw SMITH Sarah Ann
    R O SMITH Walter George - J
(polling district E [1] Talbot Ward)

There is an additional entry for 1929
    81 Warbreck Road
    - O SMITH Walter George - J (abode 49 Coleridge Road)
before the surname is this sybol upload_2019-10-31_15-11-4.png
    (polling district D Claremont Ward)

I can only guess what the letters before the names denote (but I bet someone on here will know;)). My guess R = resident and Rw = Residents wife, O = Owner and Dw Dwelling (living there) perhaps.

So is this Walter and Sarah Ann Goldsmith?
The initial G in the previous post could now be for George

If this is him - and it certainly looks like it - I wonder why he added George....

Thank you so much @MollyMay I will have a look on FMP when I am on the laptop again. :)

Ooh! Ooh! Ooh! What do you all think of this......

1911 census has a George and Sarah Ann RALPH living at 92 Manor St, Accrington, Lancashire.

George b Accrington c1886 Iron Turner
Sarah Ann b Accrington c 1884 Cotton Weaver.

There is a death of a George RALPH aged 31 in December quarter 1916 in Haslingden RD (which covers Accrington) leaving Sarah Ann a widow and free to remarry.

Or am I clutching at straws?

Opinions please before I go mad and buy certificates....

    Hmmmm....

Unless there is an error in 1939, this is not the correct Sarah Ann. The one wed to George RALPH had the maiden name of TOMLINSON and was baptised in Accrington on 17th April 1884. Walter's Sarah Ann was born in 1885. :(
