Who was Walter's Wife?

I've had a quick look but haven't turned up anything that late

 

re: Smith vs. Goldsmith -
I wonder if being Goldsmith sounded too ethnic for the time period (between the World Wars). Either too German, or even Jewish? Just "Smith" is simpler and more broadly acceptable for someone in business. Doesn't help with the search, just a passing thought. Interesting thread.

 

That thought crossed my mind Barb, but why would Walter go down that road and not any of his siblings? Having said that, it could explain the supposed ‘rift’, with the rest of the family not being too happy at Walter disclaiming the family name.

 

Has anyone checked the occupants of that address in 1911?
Maybe Sarah was living there then.
Isn’t the 1921 available to view?

Be interesting to see if they charge extra to view it like they do the 1939 Register.

There is a substitute through The Genealogist and I was allowed a peak.
1 Walter Goldsmith, in Wandsworth and a W Goldsmith in Hampstead. That's as far as I was allowed so if anyone has a sub to The Genealogist then perhaps he might be there.

 

The 1921 substitute 'census' on The Genealogist is compiled from directories. The Walter Goldsmith in Wandsworth was living at 11 Eglantine Road, SW18 and W. Goldsmith was living at 84 West End Lane, Kilburn. No other clues as to occupation

Edited to add that Lancashire isn't covered, so I can't check Blackpool

 

I came across 1934 Directory of Blackpool amounderness.co.uk It lists MOST head of households or business. Only one Goldsmith appears and that is for Arthur M and no Sarah Smiths either. So I started going through each letter looking for that 49 Coleridge Road address. I gave up after B.

 

I've just started seeing what I can turn up in the papers. I've found a series of adverts throughout 1933 which read
Lytham St Anne's
Leicester Pte. Hotel, 5, Clifton Drive S. nr. pier, ex. cuisine, sep. tables; terms 9/6 to 12/6 - Mrs Smith, prop.
Doesn't help much does it

FMP has electoral Rolls (in Census set, select electoral rolls from drop down)

I just entered 1929 +/- 10 years, place Lancashire and in 'optional keywords' put 49 Coleridge Road

3 results:- 2 identical entries for 1929 & 1931- 49 Coleridge Road

R O SMITH Walter George - J
(polling district E [1] Talbot Ward)

There is an additional entry for 1929
81 Warbreck Road
- O SMITH Walter George - J (abode 49 Coleridge Road)
before the surname is this sybol
(polling district D Claremont Ward)

I can only guess what the letters before the names denote (but I bet someone on here will know). My guess R = resident and Rw = Residents wife, O = Owner and Dw Dwelling (living there) perhaps.

So is this Walter and Sarah Ann Goldsmith?
The initial G in the previous post could now be for George

 

I put Walter Smith (afterwards) in the name box and got 7 'hits' 1927 -1931

 

If Walter Goldsmith is Walter George Smith then this marriage may be relevent
