Forgive my haste as I must go to bed- a tad unwell, first tho' as I have just found this interesting birth registration I had to ask here first. The date will explain lack of information given.

A male born 1997 in3rd Quarter 7 month given is registered with same two Christian names & 3 different surnames, same M's m n.
district number, Register number & entry number all same as.
Could it be the first was mother unwed, 2nd married to or nearly & 3rd was married to but not now? o_O
Makes for difficult searching. :( 1hr 29mins on a good run from London. [ 45.4miles]

    Any help gratefully accepted.

Now to find the hotty bottle & bed.
forgot it didn't I? the date. now inserted.

Hope you got a good night's sleep and are feeling better now.

There's someone on another forum (ex-registrar) who regularly points out that in cases like this there's only one registration, but multiple entries in the index. So if you wanted a certificate it wouldn't matter which entry you used - it would be the same in each case.

As for why there are so many entries, the most likely explanation for two, I think, would be that the parents weren't married. There could be any number of reasons for a third one, such as the mother having been married before, a professional name, one of the parents having unmarried parents or a stepfather etc, so varying between surnames.

It's almost impossible to say for definite, as it's something that can often only be answered with personal knowledge of the family circumstances. A certificate might provide some clues, or it might just say "also known as..." without giving the reason.

I don't think I've really added anything to what you'd already worked out, but if nothing else, it means your grey matter is still intact. ;) (Or if it isn't, then maybe mine isn't either )

    Take care.

Thank you arthur. Not much improvement so far here- took me three tries to find the forum. So many sites start with 'Genealogy'. :(
Your grey matter is fine as Flook liked your post, which augers well for me.
I did wonder if more than one person had registered the birth & used the M's mn they thought was correct.

This may be a probable 3rd cousin but I don't feel brave enough to approach & ask so shall have to try to work around & about to get closer. Thank you for making me feel weller.

I am in the indexes 3 times, Once with my surname which is a combination of both parents surnames (abc-xyz) once with mothers surname (abc) and once with fathers surname (xyz). Which seems to be down to the way the registrar filled in the certificate where my mother entry says formerly (abc) now known as (abc-xyz). I have a sneaky feeling I am in there more than 3 times but cant be bothered to look.

I wonder who that person was, no-one comes to mind but the post is familiar, I think I worked out the dates & reason in the end. Nowcannot find. Legacy doesn't do a 'date search' as such.& notes don't appear anywhere. Oh well, there'll be another mystery before too long I'm sute. ;)
