Ooh yuk. I cant bear bananas. Its my mums fault making me eat banana sandwiches as a kid. 2 slices white buttered bread, mashed banana with sugar - absolutely turns my stomach. I now cant eat 'sloppy' food like porridge, rice pudding etc. I also remember the Corona man and returning your bottles and getting money back. We also only really had pop at christmas as a treat. As to milk, I love milk, stems frim school but I can only drink it room temperature - again stems from school as it was room temp by the time we got to drink it.
Good grief MM - I could have written all that, the only difference being the ginger beer plant exploded under the kitchen sink....
Oh yes. Firstly lightly brown your toast then slice banana on it sprinkle with brown sugar then put it under the grill until the sugar caramelises. Yuuum. A serving of thick cream on the top of that would really work Poor hubby has to have, twice a day, full cream milk with hospital grade Sustagen. After nearly 12 months, he’s a bit over it.
Never had ginger beer 'POP' on me, probably because I only made it twice, never got to do it agan. Skimmed milk- eeeeerk, even the [plastic]bottled milk we get now tastes like powdered milk, not a fan.
Do you remember the Ginger Punch the Corona man brought at Christmas? We thought we were the bee's knees drinking that in sherry glasses. I loved all the weekly deliveries. We had a baker's van that called every Monday, at three on the dot. I spent all my pocket money on the van... the uncovered loaves sat in racks in the middle of the van, and the back doors opened to reveal a tiny grocer's shop - everything you needed, it would be in there. Crates of chocolate and sweets, cakes, drinks, ice cream and lollies in an ice bucket. Nothing made me stop what I was doing faster than hearing that van change-down at the bottom of the hill at two minutes to three.
We had a shop nearby but I can understand the excitement hearing the van come along. But it just reminded me of the Cadbury chocolate ad here with a little girl buying her Mum a chocolate for her birthday but she has no money so uses buttons, a toy ring and a few pocket sized toys for payment. The shopkeeper then gives her back her little toy unicorn as change. She runs out of the shop with the chocolate ‘Happy Birthday Mum’. Just love it.
I don't remember our ginger beer blowing up luckily. But will never forget the day at tin of ravioli in tomato sauce, which was being cooked in a pan of water, boiled dry and exploded all over the kitchen ceiling. Oh and another Corona variety - dandelion and burdock!
Dandelion & burdock, nice, but on Walthamstow High Street there was a stall that sold Sarsaparilla. It was across the road from the eel stall. Must defend skimmed milk as , per pint, it has more Calcium than semi and whole milk. Has anybody mentioned cockles and whelks?
