Any ideas on the word highlighted in yellow? The one highlighted in orange is Kent, so the 't' goes up to the yellow word. It definitely starts with a 'B' as there's other B's I can compare it to. He was a farmer.
Both? Was there just two of them....that squiggle thing at the end is a squiggle and the word Executor has a capital E that is lost in the added word. ?????? I think... I know there is no loop on the h .....but ‘both’ makes sense....to me anyway.
Hmm. My initial response was 23 yards/years. But seeing it as a 'B' ... Burrar/Barrer/Butrer ? Is there a "Kent Borough/Borough of Kent"? Or does it refer to the man? Just musing, thinking aloud.
Alexander. Reading the new bit I just posted I think it refers to his occupation. But I have Alexander's will and it says he's a farmer. Is there another word for a farmer that begins with B maybe.
I think it's Butcher - which often went in tandem with Farmer. The 'c' is one of those with a simple vertical line (as in 'Executor'), and the 'er' is similar to the end of 'Alexander', except that the 'e' is a bit small and faint.
By golly I think you got it. Well done! Thank you Arthur, I didn't know that butcher went in tandem with farmer. These are the first actual farmers that I've found in my tree. Most are labourers. Thanks for your help everyone.
Was a person who made Butter called a Butterer (Butrer) ? I just can't see the "ch" of Butcher, although the letter that overlaps the capital "E" of Executors appears to be an "a" changed to "e" or "c".
It's Buccks - the preceding words are 'the county of....' with, I think, Kent crossed out and Bucks added in superscript
One of my newish found ancestors was both a farmer and a butcher, probably a way of cutting out the middle man.
My Midlands ancestors kept it in the family- Dad was a farmer, offspring were butcher, saddler, victualler... is that where I got my ability to find ways of using up leftovers?
Bit late to the thread, but there's an Alex. Solomon apprenticing as a butcher, Dartford, 1797. What year was the Will?
The will he's in is dated 1805 and he is a business partner with John Garland, grazier, whose will it is. The apprentice could possibly be a son. Thanks for your input BH.
