I am looking for a death in Canada of George Innes. Now the only indication of a death is a newspaper article which we think is posted by the family back here. George Innes was born we think in Christchurch, Hampshire and we have lots on the family here if he does fit in and probably does. George Innes was born in England around 1825. He appears to have gone to Canada in the 1850's and married an Irish girl Mary Mockler (that seems an impossible name to follow). I have connected the Christchurch family with 'father' James Innes who is also a tailor, he married a Mary Trevis. I cant for the life of me find an 1861 census in Canada or a death to fit George Innes. I have seen the 1851 census with the family in Christchurch UK, then a marriage in 1857 in Ontario also the a 1871 census in Ontario but would like to find that 1861 census and his death in particular. Anyone any suggestions. With many thanks Elizabeth
I think you May find that it has been translated as george jones in the Canada 1861 That has george a tailor and Mary on the census in London Middlesex Canada Ontario It definitely looks like innes to me
Thanks Sandie, yes I think that is him, as it includes the first son born, thank you. I have the patience to look endlessly for records but I am not very good at the variations of names and then I forget what I was looking for in the first place! George seemed to always live in the London area Ontario, so I am not sure where Petersville fits in, as per the newspaper. Thank you again
name petersville alt names kensington source: wikipedia london west source: wikipedia type former community located in middlesex, ontario, canada (1874 - 1897) see also westminster (township), middlesex, ontario, canada township in which petersville located until 1897 london, middlesex, ontario, canada amalgamated into london, ontario, in 1897 not found him yet but this does say where petersville is
Thanks Sandiep that is helpful. Without this death certificate we cant link George to his UK family and that's not even thinking about his wife Mary Mockler. I have seen her name written several different ways. It's not so bad when you have one difficult name but a couple is unfair. Just can't get reliably any further back.
well I am not having any luck at present could do with one of our Canadian cousins to join in perhaps add Canada query to title might find one they may have a better idea of Canadian sites......the only death cert I have found that mentions George Innes and Mary Muckler as parents of Thomas in 1932 but it says George is born in Edinburgh Scotland Mary in Dublin Ireland this is on FamilySearch. I have tried some of the Ontario sites and Ancestry and Findmypast but nothing yet
Remember famiies clung to what they thought they were told of Parents birth places etc. & deaths would be recorded where they happened. Possibly at a work place or in transit.
In 1934 George had become Thos Innes according to his Son-in- law recorded on his wife's death. Name: Thos Innes Gender: Male Spouse: Mokler Child: Minnie Theresa Robertson not having any luck in 1861 either.
A Robertson family tree has George listed as Thomas George Innes, b. 10 June Hampshire england 1825 or 1828. [Bapt. 11 Dec. 1825] Parents James Innes 1796- 1878 + Mary Trevis b.1797 Christchurch, Hampshire. No-one of 24 trees seems to have 1861 census. I started to check UK census 1861 but gave up. sorry edit Duh ! of course she did silly me. I need brekky
have to stop going crossed eyed shame out of 28 trees on him on Ancestry only one has a death down as 1872 London Middlesex Ontario but he has no source ! off for my ovaltine back tomorrow
I always knew this was a tricky family! I guess what I would really like to know is how does anyone go about getting a death certificate for some one who died in London Ontario in February 1872? I can't work that out at all. I believe this death is the right one, as I have found a marriage for his wife Mary on 8th August 1873 (transcibed Mary Ennis). This was in London Ontario to a William Connor. If anyone could look at this and work out Mary's parents names (middle ones) I would be really grateful. This re-marriage fits in nicely with the death of George Innes in 1872. We did see him on the 1871 census with the family.
Here's the page from the Ontario Archives: http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/en/tracing/death_registrations.aspx Don't know if it's a help or not. And another hosted on Rootsweb: Code: http://sites.rootsweb.com/~onvsr/index.htm
Me too. Thank you for all your help Sandiep, I can just imagine how hard you worked and thank you too to all the people who try and find things out but no one realises. I thought I might try and look at Thomas Mockler and Winifred Horsley. Mary Mockler constantly says she was born in Ireland c 1841. She was married in Ontario in 1857. I wonder if she left Ireland because of the potato famine. That name is worse than Innes as I can just imagine the accent Mc...... but I haven't got anywhere here either. Well it's been an interesting journey and if I ever solve the mystery I'll come back and shout it about. So a big thank you I think you know who you are. Elizabeth
Sorry folks, just saw this and I tried for a while to find an 1861 census online but couldn't, It doesn't help that I absolutely had trouble following the plot on this family, lol. I did try some obscure spots, but lucked out. You haven't seen me for a while due to a) a bit of a slump; and b) hubby has had a slew of tests and we haven't reached the end of it yet. Soon we will get the results and will proceed from there. I will keep you more informed but this has been exhausting!! ER (A&E) at 4 am? Not my thing. That lasted for 10 hours....sigh. Later, pussycats. Sorry I couldn't help. I haven't had to use other than the LDS for Canada. I had the advantage of my dad's 250 page book on the Bowness family, local news groups and also my Swackhamers are rather well-known UEL** people and loads on Jacob, et al. ** United Empire Loyalists.....they were Yanks who came up here and fought for Canada (but really Britain) against the US troops and trounced them in the War of 1812, for one battle. I am not going to apply for the designation.....very complicated and frankly, it has been so well written up that I don't need to put UE after my name.....lordy, that would be a mouthful with my surname.
