Resurrecting this old thread for an update. Recap:- Annie Yapp was born illegitimate to Margaret Yapp on 24 Oct 1895 in Bishops Castle, Shropshire. Margaret had 3 illegitimate children before she married my grandfather Alfred Pressdee on 02 Mar 1898 also in Bishops Castle, Shropshire. 1....Mary Yapp - 17 Feb 1894 - Castle Street, Bishops Castle, Shropshire 2.... Annie Yapp - 24 Oct 1895 - 1 Pentre Hodre, Bucknell, Shropshire, Shropshire. 3....William Alfred Yapp - 04 Aug 1897 - Castlewright, Montgomeryshire 1....Mary - more to come later 2....Annie Yapp 1901 Census at home with her parents and siblings (stepdaughter) 1911 Cansus as above (stepdaughter) 3....William was killed in WW1 (have everything on him) Back to Annie.. When her brother was killed the M.O.D. sent a letter to his parents (in 1919) asking for Family members. Annie was on this list as Annie Pressdee, living at home at 1 Pentre Hodre, Bucknell, Shropshire. I found her in the 1939 register in Bishops Castle workhouse. Since then I have found her death (got certificate) this took place in Stone House, Bishops Castle. (In 1948 when the workhouse was taken over as a local hospital it had a name change to Stone House.) Annie had died there on 11 Jun 1972 aged 77, never having left. I contacted the Archives and they have sent me documents that show she was admitted on 05 Sept 1922, her next of kin is given as 'Nil' which the Archives have told me meant that the family were not to be contacted about Annie. There is also a 'M.D.' next to her name meaning 'mentally defective'. So that is the storey of Annie. 2....Mary Yapp 1901 Census at home with her parents and siblings (stepdaughter) 1911 Cansus not 100% sure but could be Mary Yapo (transcription) b. 1904 Bishops Castle, servant at 1 Whitehall Gardens Shrewsbury. Mary had an illegitimate daughter in 1916, her daughter married in 1937 and died in 05 Dec 2000. On the list sent to the M.O.D. in 1919 Mary has been omitted and not included as a family member. I could find nothing more on Mary, until last week that is, I applied for a marriage certificate for:- Marriages Sep 1919 Davies George - Yapp Yapp Mary - Davies Clun - 6a - 1672 Received the certificate today and it's her. Clun Registry Office George Davies, 22 years, bachelor, Private KSLI formerly farm labourer 1 Pentre Hodre Alfred Davies Rabbit catcher. Mary Yapp 25 years spinster Domestic servant 1 Pentre Hodre ---------- ---------- Witnesses:- Margaret Pressdee (mother) Tom Pressdee (half brother) Can anyone find George and Mary Davies in 1939 or anything on George prior to his marriage. I have found 3 possible births, don't know if they belong to George and Mary's children though. Clun Births. 1923 - Davies Mary - Yapp 1926 - Davies Ernest H - Yapp 1932 - Davies Howard O - Yapp
1911 census Obley Cottage, Obley Bucknell, Clunbury. Alfred Davies b1869 married ag lab - on the original crossed through married 20 years 2 children George b1898 Reginald b1900 RG14 PN15903 SN78
1901 census finds the family Llandbrooke, Clunbury Alfred - rabbit catcher Martha wife 5 children plus George and Reggie RG13/2508/86/18
No luck with Mary and George in 1939 Alfred Davies [b1866] with son Reginald and family still in Clun at Sty Bank on the 1939 reg. I looked at the other pages to see if George and Mary were close by - nothing found. There could be another child, a daughter, born in 1938 Shrewbury reg district Dec. qtr with mmn Yapp (I couldn't find her on the 1939 reg. either)
Thank you very much MM , that has given me something to go at. This is the first bit of my family history I've looked into for a fare while. Was starting t get stagnant. Now just to find the family later on.
Yes I have quite a lot on Frances. She left her husband and turned up at her uncles (my grandfather's) and was told that she made her bed and should lay in it, get a place of her own or go back to him. They were hard in those days.
Odd why Mary and George cannot be found. I used Mary's dob with no surname and still nothing that looked likely, unless for some reason the whole family are still redacted.
I know, I tried every different combination that I could think of but came up empty handed Can't even find a death for them.
oooh I wonder if they did. Shame the daughter Frances died, I could have asked her. Met her once in Ludlow, Shropshire but that was before I was into this game of hide and go seek so it never occurred to me .
You and everyone else too, who now rue they never asked the right questions when there was an opportunity
I may be way off here, and you may have already seen it, but there is a Mary Ann Pressdee on the 1911 census at The Greenway, Norton, Radnor, working as a servant. She is 17 and born Bishops Castle, Salop. I know your Mary is just Mary, but she could have just added an Ann (a very good name to add) and I can't find a birth registration for a Mary (Ann) Pressdee which would fit. RG14/Piece33647/Schedule No. 2/Enumeration District 20
Yes I have seen that, it is very hard to decide which one she is. This part of the family have been a nightmare to research.
