Community Garden on Bomb Site Hackney - help!?

Hi

I'm involved in making a local park into a community garden. I wanted to find out about the history of the park. Its on the corner of Downham and Ufton Rd in De Beauvoir in Hackney. Its the site of two WW2 bombs. I wanted to ask you guys what type of records might be held about the site. I have looked at the 1939 census so have some idea of the people who lived in the houses affected and I know that a large prefab was built in place of the homes, but what else can I find out? Or is that it. WOuld love to get some more personal accounts of what it was like during the war and where people sheltered. I'm guessing no-one died or we would probably know - but is that assumption correct?

I want to put all the information onto a board to put up in the park to let local people get a sense of the history and expereinces of local people during the second world war.

Any help would be gratefully received!

Hackney Archives are a good source. I searched on De Beauvoir and came up with a lot of results - including photographs

Thanks Jan, I meant to add the link to the actual search page rather than the search results I found but, you know, more haste less speed.....

 

To find any deaths you can search for civilian casualties at the cwg.org, you used to be able to put in keywords such as a streetname, or you can look at those deaths recorded by Hackney Borough if you know the date of the bombing

hi is anyone a member of the 'find my past' register? I'm keen to see a bit more about the people who were living in the three homes which were damaged by the bombs, that eventually were cleared to make way for the little park. I think the numbers would have been 94, 92 and 90 Downham road. I can see their names but would love to know a bit more about the people...but not keen on coughing up £35 for it. Hope you don't think this is cheeky!
