I'm working on Edward Bevis baptised 1727 at St Mary the Less, Cambridge. I have found a likely marriage to Mary Webb 5/12/1755 on both Family Search and FreeReg. FreeReg gives the place as Haverhill, Suffolk. F.S. page gives Event Place as Cambridge Cambs. then adds Event Original as Haverhill Suffolk. with the same date 5/12/1755. As the Bevis group I'm following all lived in Cambridge, can anyone throw light on the discrepancies. Thanks.
FindMyPast has the marriage taking place at St Mary's in Haverhill on 5th December 1755. Edward's surname has been transcribed as BEAVES. I wonder if Cambridge was where the Banns were read for Edward.... Mind you, Haverhill is within shouting distance of Cambridgeshire and so might have been counted as being there by the transcribers.
The marriage in 1755 does not appear on the Cambridgeshire Marriage Index either as a Banns record or actual Marriage record. Edward may well have originated in Haverhill, as FreeReg have two baptisms for an Edward BEAVIS, one on 20 January 1722/23, son of Thomas & Elizabeth BEAVIS and the other on 5 January 1728/29, son of Edward & Mary BEAVIS. There is also one on 19 January 1734/35, son of Edward & Jane BEAVIS but perhaps this latter Edward is less likely to be the one married in 1755. Edward & Mary seem to remain in Haverhill having children from their marriage until at least 1770 according to baptismal transcriptions on FMP. Burial at Haverhill on 26 May 1805 for an Edward BEAVIS, aged 74, which could perhaps be relevant. Janet
Hi Janet, Since 2015 I've been using Ancestry, Find My Past plus other freebies like F.S and FreeReg. Now I'm currently trying to close on the remaining brickwalls on several families. Hence much flailing about. The Edward Bevis I'm working on was baptised 08/1727 Parents Edward Bevis and Susanna Anderson.at St Mary the Less, Cambridge I provisionally linked Edward to Mary Webb based on the Family Search data, where Cambridge is mentioned. Edward Bevis England Marriages, 1538–1973 Name: Edward Bevis Event Type: Marriage Event Date: 5 Dec 1755 Event Place: Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England Event Place (Original): Haverhill, Suffolk, Cambridge, England Gender: Male Spouse's Name: Mary Webb Spouse's Gender: Female However from your reply it appears that F.S. data is incorrect. Bernard
All I can really say is that I cannot find the names of an Edward BEAVIS (or variants) or a Mary WEBB on the Cambridgeshire Marriage Index in 1755 and that an Edward & Mary BEAVIS (or variants) are having children from 1755 onwards at Haverhill according to FMP but both sources are transcriptions and not actual parish register images. There is a marriage on the Cambridgeshire Marriage Index which is corroborated by a PR Transcription on Family Search for an Edward BEAVIS & a Susanna BURGOYNE at Linton, Cambridgeshire on 6 January 1763. The marriage is followed by the baptism of 2 children at Linton, Hannah on 3 July 1763 and John on 2 September 1764, but whether this is your Edward ...... There are also several burial records at Cambridge for an Edward BEAVIS, & variants, from 1727/28 onwards on FMP, but again they are only transcriptions so no other details. I did a search on Cambridgeshire Archives online catalogue for Edward BEVIS/BEAVIS but only 1 hit came up, that of a Settlement Certificate dated 20 February 1719/20 for Edward & his family in St Mary the Less, Cambridge. Janet
Thanks for this. Info on a Settlement Cert interesting*. Is the name of his wife shown on the Cert. For Edw. Bevis born 1684 was living in the St Mary the less Parish about that time and her name could make the connection. *(I've recently found another ancestor in Suffolk on my Mothers side, who was a registered Pauper and he moved his family out of area without a Settlement Certificate and was returned back to his home village). Tough life. Bernard
No sorry, the transcript of the record only gives the name of Edward. The actual Settlement document might give more detail. Janet
