Following on from Missing in 1861?, I am trying to discover the whereabouts of James (Senior) in 1911. In 1901, James (b1832, Penton Mewsey, Hampshire) was living in Eastcliff, Bournemouth with his wife Ellen and son Edward. (RG13, piece 1043, folio 30, page 12) Ellen died in on 13th September 1904 and was buried in Lewisham (Hither Green) Cemetery. James remarried - Sarah Decima COATES in Eastbourne RD in the June quarter of 1909. When James died on 5th March 1924, he was living in Winchester Road, Southampton. However, I am unable to find the couple in the 1911 census - anywhere! Just to complicate matters, the surname was now incorporating James' mother's maiden name of GOSSET. Therefore, they could be TANNER, GOSSET, GOSSET-TANNER.... Oh yes - they are still missing in 1861, in spite of the valiant efforts of the good folk here.

All the other marriages/death notices on this page are from Belfast. Perhaps he returned to Eastbourne to marry Sarah then went back to Belfast.
In 1910 he was in Willesden.... Willesden Chronicle 1st April 1910 On Good Friday at St Peter’s Church, Cricklewood, there were services morning and evening, conducted by the Rev. Gossett Tanner. Easter Day the three celebrations of Holy Communion were very largely attended. The Rev. G. Wallace preached in the morning and the Rev. G. Tanner (who also conducted the children's service in the afternoon), the evening.
By 1916 he was in Shirley, just outside Southampton Hampshire Independent 28th October 1916 Curdridge News Special sermons were preached in the afternoon and evening by the Rev. James Gossett Tanner, of Shirley. The offerings at both services were devoted to the Y.M.C.A. Huts fund.
Just had a look on the 1911 census for Ireland but no joy. Yes, both of the James (father and son) were vicars.
Ooh how about this.... Bath Chronicle 30th November 1912 Advent Convention in Bath - In connection with the London Prophecy Investigation Society, a special three days' convention on the Lord's Second Coming was commenced on Wednesday at the Jubilee Hall, Broad Street. The speakers include - the Rev. T. George, B.D., Rector of St. Helen's, Ipswich, the Rev. J. Gosset-Tanner, Chaplain of Dusseldorf, and Mr. Walter Scott, of Nottingham. He does get a lot of mentions in the papers, one way or another......
And I can tell you which church...... Bournemouth Graphic 21st January 1916 Annual Meeting of the Church Association at Bournemouth ……Other speakers included the Rev. James Gosset-Tanner, M.A. (some time incumbent of Christ Church, Dusseldorf)…..
And by 1916 he was described in the Hampshire Advertiser as being of Shirley when he officiated at a Harvest Thanksgiving Festival in Curdridge. Not that it seems to help me find him in the 1911 census! Janet

Hampshire Chronicle 2nd August 1902 On the 25th July at St John’s Church Guernsey, Edward Gosset Gosset-Tanner, third son of the Rev. James Gosset-Tanner, formerly Military Chaplain in India and many years Vicar of Emmanuel Church Maida-hill to Christine Janet, eighth daughter of Edward Clark, of Lapsewood, Sydenham-hill. James snr's first wife Mary/Marie GOSSET (1805-1835) came from Jersey, so nothing surprises me! Two vicars, both named James TANNER with a GOSSET in the middle (or not!) and wandering round the country....
Off piste and nothing to do with 1911 but familysearch has Sarah Decima Gossett-Tanner probate 1934 .Death 1933 and Beneficiary's Name: George Henry Duncan Coates.
