Hello everyone! I have been away for a while, filling in the blanks of a lot of trees, some mine, some not. LOL I do a lot of genealogy work on Wikitree and at present am working on Sarah Bungard. I found a baptism for a Sarah Bungard on March 26, 1814 in Sidlesham, Sussex. Her parents being Simeon Bungard and Maria Wheeler. Looks like they had about 11 children, Sarah being the first. I think this Sarah married William Horwood in Alton, Hampshire in the April to June quarter of 1840. Would she have been 50 miles from her home town and get married. Was she a domestic servant or a sojourner in that parish? And using the last name Horwood, I find that: In the 1851 census for Kingscombe, Hampshire, she is a widow, it says her birth place Sidlesham and the 1861 census for Andover, Hampshire, still a widow, says Chichester, which after checking found it is about 4 1/2 miles between the two. She is a widow with three children in both and I found the possible death of her spouse, William in 1849 in Andover, Hampshire. That would fit with not having anymore children. Haven't found a date of death for her yet. Any help gratefully accepted. TY Wendy
If you contact the Church Warden they may be able to help. A kind lady dealt with an enquiry I had there. Code: http://www.stmary-sidlesham.org.uk/contact-us.html Scroll down to message part of the page.
Sarah and William are on the 1841 census - High Street, Alton HO107 piece381 book7 folio15 page 25 Surname transcribed as Harwood I can only find Walter in 1871 though
Thank you Colin A and Molly May!! 1841 very hard to read, boy! I have Walter in 1851 with his grandmother, Elizabeth Harwood in Barton Stacey, Hampshire. And 1861 with Sarah Horwood, his mother and siblings Elizabeth K Horwood and Walter John Horwood. 1871 Walter is in St Mary Magdalen, Somerset as a woollen draper's assistant. Wendy
Any ideas on William Horwood born in Hampshire 1812-1816, a carpenter in the 1841 census, with wife Sarah? Wendy
There is a baptism for a William Harwood in Barton Stacey 5/11/1814 s/o William and Elizabeth, which is the nearest I can find to Alton, but it is still some way off (I can only see a transcription). There is another in Alverstoke s/o William and Mary Horwood 2/4/1815 3/2/1811 Lymington to William and Edith Harwood
Well, I think it could be the Barton Stacey one for 5/11/1814, as the children have Barton Stacey listed in the 1851 and 1861 census. Maybe the whole Horwood clan comes from there. Are there batch numbers for birth/baptism and marriages for Horwood in Barton Stacey? Wendy
Thank you so much Molly May. Have to sign off and go and rescue supper for the day. With Covid-19, our TV station first designated Tuesday's as Takeout Tuesday and we go and buy dinner and eat at home. Stay safe, I will be back to check in tomorrow. Wendy
