The occupation in question that I am unable to make out is that for John BROWN who appears on the 1871 census in Great Staughton, Huntingdonshire. Ref: piece 1535, folio 77, page 10. Clues: 1) He trained as a school teacher and is working as one in Abbotsley, down the road in 1861 2) In 1881, he is a Relieving Officer and Registrar of BMDs 2) In 1891, he is still a Relieving Officer Registrar of BMDs 3) In 1901, he is a Relieving Officer and Attendance Office top the Board of Guardians as well as Registrar. Looking at 1871 again (it is not too clear) could it be: R.O. Register Asst Overseer? Thanks.
I think you are right, Jan. Definitely R, almost certainly O, Register Asst Overseer. FMP is marginally clearer than Ancestry. Janet
Sorry but I only got the first bit which I think is R O Register. Though in 1870 John was a relieving officer according to a newspaper article and I see in 1878 John was also the relieving officer when daughter Gertrude was born. Also in 1865 when a son was born.
