Thanks, so it is still possible. Hasn't worked for me for a few weeks now. Maybe I should log out and log in again. I will give it a try.

and on it goes....Ancestry gave me 10 "tree hints' for a great uncle. All 10 trees (different user names) have my Gt uncle's death record attached to a completely different chap with the same name born in Colchester, lived in Colchester yet buried in Barnet. Ok that's possible you say. But my chap was born in Barnet, lived within a 5/10 mile radius of Barnet all his life. Still. you say, he might have perished elsewhere. I checked with my Auntie and asked "was you uncle Fred buried in Barnet in 1990?" she said "Well I hope so - I went to the funeral !" :)

And so it goes ! - these trees which people copy to give them more names. I have seen in some trees - my father died well before he did, in a completely different county! It is quite amusing really they seem to clutch at straws.

In one tree that I looked at they had the couple marrying in Wellington, New Zealand. They were only off by around 11,630 miles, they actually married in Wellington, Shropshire.

Although that is usually Ancestry playing about. If you don't add 'England' or 'Wales' to an address it does it for you when your back is turned. I was mortified the first time my Halifax ancestors appeared to be bobbing back and forth to Nova Scotia on their weekly ag lab pittance. Despite Halifax, West Riding, being around a heck of a lot longer than Halifax, Nova Scotia.

    Ancestry likes to be smug.

Just spent half an hour looking for a census entry. I know there is one because I have a screen print of part of it, but no reference. tried under married name and maiden name, first name, surnames only - to no avail until my added brain thought to check one of the other names - bingo. More transcription madness and another name variation to make a note of. Second from bottom "Elizabeth ? what's your guess ? Does occupation say "none" ? I'm losing the will to live.......

Losing the will to live - again !
Am I missing something - Why on earth would this entry be transcribed as Sarah Louisa McFall ??? 70A2F682-2BFA-4B44-8862-D5DE97DB6DB2_1_201_a.jpeg

Dear Ancestry users. William Ireland who was born in Gloucestershire in 1570 did not have a 14 year old mother who just nipped down from Lancashire to have a baby and nipped back up again. Nor did William just pop along to Stoke on Trent to get married to a woman who lived and died there. Please buy yourselves a UK map and also, just because one name is right, if the area is so very far off, it is likely incorrect. Love, Frustrated of France

I keep a huge tree on the A-site, but I try to put in signals that some parts are dicey- like ROADWORKS, SPEC and DOUBT in the Suffix box, and after some of the questionable reference docs. I get driven nearly batty by people who contact me and say "You have stolen a branch of my tree and you spelled my 7th cousin's name incorrectly" when it's clear the branch is NOT attached to anything and all the people have DOUBT appended to their entries.
People with DNA and no tree are the bane of my genealogy life! I'm always emailing them to say "Could you please just allow me to have one full name and date of birth for a close relative?" I can usually work with that if they don't speak a language like Russian or Greek. I even got a 2 connections to a man from Finland the other day- we both descend from the Brus/Bruce family of Scotland and previously Norway. Neither of us speak the other language. Trees shout out!

I heartily agree with you...so many matches, no way of knowing the connection!! I think a lot of them got swayed by adverts on TV to find their heritage ( which the DNA results have likely changed 2 or 3 times since they got them ;)) and that is the only reason... Especially when they don't reply to messages.

I never did have a reply to the message one of our members sent to a tree owner for me. Pffft their loss, let them follow the wrong line.

Got a bit excited found an entry for a chap about the right time. Residence ?London, London, England (sic) right place only to find this chap was actually located in Scarborough, Yorkshire ! but listed in a directory called “London & Country” ! Does this mean the whole country has been transcribed as being in London ? I dare not look
