Good Afternoon, I am looking at a list of ships that my Grandad served on. Here I have to add, I think that is what the list is. His name is at the top, it has Chatham and a ref. number. I am not sure, very rusty, what I can and cannot put on the site. Is it ok to put his name? I cannot remember where the page, giving his name, dob etc date and periods of engagement, came from. Well, I have made a start.

Thank you. My grandad James Thomas Dolan, dob 6th March 1893, dates and period of engagement, 6th March 1911 for 12 years. Starts with Ganges and goes on to Pembroke 1, 27th July 1916 to 29 Nov 1916, invalided, shrapnel wounds. My Mum said that he had a metal leg that was held on by a large leather belt.
what you are looking at is the Navy register of services in other words his Royal navy service record
Ancestry have the 'Pension Record Ledger' for James Thomas Dolan service number J3595 in their Fold 3 records (so you have to pay extra to see them). Their source is the Western Front Association records. Either way I think you would have to pay to see these records
The service record is in ancestry itself so if you have a sub you can see it Pension record is separate in fold 3. Only use fold 3 when a free offer!!
My memory is sketchy, but... Pembroke 1 is ringing a bell. (No pun intended ). I am sure that one of mine 'served' on what I thought was a ship but when I dug further it was a naval base. Edit to add, HMS Pembroke is the name of the Royal Naval Barracks at Chatham.
Ganges & Pembroke were both shore establishments. This list might help: Code: https://www.nmrn.org.uk/shore-establishments His penultimate entry is Dido (Lance), and although Dido is not listed as a shore establishment, it looks like was actually a depot ship (see below) and he actually served on HMS Lance, with Dido being the 'administrative' base. The notes on the right of his record say he was seriously wounded on the Lance. socky what did you want to find from the service record is there anything other than what Pembroke 1 was ?
For info, although he was listed against Dido (Lance) until 26 July 1916, he appeared in the Daily Casualty List on 25 March 1916 as 'Seriously Wounded' , so the incident will have been some time before that. For army injuries it tended to be a few weeks, but I'm not sure about Navy.
I was hoping to find some detail of the shrapnel injury as Grandad, who I never knew, had an artificial leg.
