William BIDDISS married Elizabeth GRAMSTON/E on 14 August 1898, St Olave, Southwark. The marriage certificate says he was a Carpenter (Journeyman).

Elizabeth is with her mother (also Elizabeth) in 1901 (RG13/363/135/24) - 21 Camelot Street, Southwark, the address she gives on her marriage certificate. Other members of the Gramston/e family are also there (relationships and names mangled ). However, William is missing - can anyone find him anywhere? I'm beginning to wonder if he was just missed off the census.

n.b. William and Elizabeth are together in 1911 at 16 Camelot Street. He was born 2 Dec 1875 and baptised at St Saviour Southwark in 1880.

    I cannot find him :(
Looking at the 1901 I wonder if William was the entry under Elizabeth and the next was her brother Albert Gramston, but the 2 got merged together, hence Albert being enumerated with the name Beddess (like Elizabeth)

I like your thinking @MollyMay I have searched high and low for William in 1901 - I think I will just have to make a note saying that he was missed off the census.

Some of the missing men in 1901 had joined up for the Boer War.

Perhaps he rejoined later for South Africa after the Victorian Conflicts

Is this the William Biddiss a labourer, father Thomas in the 1891?
Is he the same William Biddiss born 1875 and died in 1974 at Greenwhich? If so WOW what a great age.():-)

I was able to glimpse a record on National Archives that is watermarked but able to get some info on the William Biddiss who enlisted in 1893.
His dob has 11 Dec 1874 Bermondsey, he was carpenter and father was Thomas. Thomas was crossed out and replaced with wife Eliza as NOK. Her address is 16 Camelot Street Bow, London. Lots of info and dates onboard ships and was discharged 29/10/1901.
Could this be him? I know birth dates differ both day and year but could that be due to miscalculation, the year at least.
YES, just spotted your address in post #1 16 Camelot Street......BINGO.
So he is Private William Biddiss 8170 Royal Marine Light Infantry.

He is seen enlisting again in 1914 and discharged 7/5/1919. This info has been written on the second half of the page of another marine, number 8167 and 8167 is on his, 8170.....

Yes, Yes, and Yes (well, I am sure the 1

I have a note of of William Biddess of 16 Camelot Street, Tabard Road, Pte 8170 R.M. Barracks, Chatham from the Absent Voters List on Ancestry in 1919 and wasn't sure if it was William or his son William (b 1902).

Why I never thought of looking at the National Archives, I don't know. Thank you @Archie's Mum {-(^^)-} The records are still free to download at the moment, so shall go and do that now.

@Jellylegs I was giving some thought to your William and the great age that he acquired. He was born in 1875 and died in 1974. In his lifetime the world changed so much and how many conflicts did he live through, ending with the Vietnam war. I salute him. Well done William.
Did you end up getting his records?

Yes @Archie's Mum, I did get his records. The 3549 was his also, but everything on there had been copied onto the later one (8170). I am sure he was on the ship Centurion when the 1901 census was taken. What I found interesting was that he was serving on the "Hermes" when it was hit by a German torpedo (or two depending on what you read) in the early hours of 31 October 1914, just off Calais. There were over 400 people on board at the time. The ship stayed afloat for a couple of hours, which I think made it possible for the majority of them to be rescued. Twenty two people were lost :(. He was a lucky man.
