I have, in NoT: a John Henry Lascelles Glendinning born in 1922

    FreeBMD
    John Henry Lascelles Glendinning
    BIRTH
21 JAN 1922, Reg. Mar 1922, Newcastle Upon Tyne, Northumberland, England; V10b p164; mother Thirlwell; Bap. 28 Feb 1922. (Exact dates from family).

Tried FreeBMD, Scotlands People and Irish records at https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/, but no success, neither with a spinster Thirlwell or similar, nor a previously married Thirlwell. Also tried Canada and USA records through the A-site without yield.

Lateral thinking needed! I know this guy existed as his relative is in touch with me- JHLG married twice, once to Lilian Walsh in 1948 and second to Joan Robson in 1968 after wife 1 died in 1965.

He is on the 1939 Register at 33 Hill Street, NoT with his widowed mother Sarah GLENDINNING, whose birth was 31st May 1883.

So now looking for a Sarah THIRLWELL marriage.

I was looking at that earlier but couldn't find a THIRLWELL/BEATY marriage. :(

However, as Sarah would have been 39 when she had her son, it is quite likely that she had been married before.

The only SARAH THIRLWELL birth registered between 1880 & 1885 is:
SARAH BARRASS THIRLWELL (Jun 1885 Tynemouth 10b/259)
    and
she married Jun 1905 Tynemouth 10b/579:
    Jacob BROWN or William DICKSON.

If Glendinning is perhaps her 3rd marriage? (The Great War happens between these events ...)

The birth certificate should indicate any other names that Sarah went by as well as her maiden name, which might provide some clues....

Sarah Barrass Thirlwell died in 1975 as Sarah Barrass Dickson.
BTW it took me forever to figure what NoT meant....

That's not "our" Sarah as she and William are at 18 Scott Street, Seaton Valley in the 1939 Register... :headbang:

There sure is a shortage of marriages for these characters! I've tried so many combinations also. I think some wild spelling might need to be thrown into the mix.

There were a couple of births to a Beaty mmn Thirlwell. Female 1912, Castle Ward Northumberland and Blanche 1915
A possible marriage 1911 Sarah Stephenson and John Beaty on the same page.

A possible marriage Sarah Ann Thirwell and William Stephenson 1909 Haltwhistle and a death Haltwhistle 1909 Wm Stephenson age 28.
Also a child Matthew Gills Stephenson b 1909 .He is with an uncle in Castle Ward in 1901.

    I can't find Sarah in 1901.

In 1901 there is a Sarah Ann Thirwell.b Farlam Cumberland with family in Hartleyburn, Haltwhistle.

All conjecture of course, but maybe worth checking.

I was following the same line of thinking. :D

The 1901 census has this Sarah with her parents John and Isabella (Née DIXON) at Howgill, Midgeholme, Brampton, Cumbria (4859/85/39)

In 1911, Isabella is in Haltwhistle, Northumberland, visiting her daughter Mary Jane, who is married to a Thomas ARMSTRONG, whilst the rest of the family are back in Brampton – except for Sarah. But there is no reason why Sarah did not also cross over to the east coast from the west.

Sorry I meant to say I couldn't find Sarah in 1911. And that Matthew was with an uncle in 1911.

And that Sarah and family were in Haltwhistle in 1891.

Am always a bit disorganised working on a phone!

    Castle Ward RD, March Q 1911, 10b/441

So.... Sarah should be going by the name of BEATY in the 1911 census....

    Yay! :D

5 Blaney Road, Heddon on the Wall, Northumberland:
John BEATY, b 1889, Wetherall, Cumberland, Coliery Fireman, Boilers above ground
Sarah Ann BEATY, b 1884, Halton Gate, Northumberland - I wonder if the two birthplaces have been transposed...

Mmm there is indeed a John Beaty b Carlisle reg DIST 1888 and in Wetheral in 1891.

Is there another suitable Sarah Ann Thirlwell?

Mind you this Sarah was at Halton Lea Gate, Hartleyburn Haltwhistle age 8 in 1891 so her earliest memories may be from there.

Now I think I get it- Sarah Thirlwell never actually married Mr Glendinning, although they may have intended to, but the boy got the father's surname anyway. Sarah was still Dickson when she died. Thank you all! She was a doozy.

    Hmmm....

There is a death for a Sarah Ann GLENDINNING in NoT, September quarter 1976.

The dob given for her is 31st May - the same as the 1939 Register when she is with son John - although the year of birth is stated as 1881. However, the information is only as good as the knowledge of the person registering the death. ;)

What is the source for her dying named DICKSON?
