Just received advice about this scam via MSN news, thought I'd pass it on in case others aren't aware of it. "Australian Netflix users have been warned to be vigilant of a sophisticated email phishing scam attempting to steal thousands of dollars from their bank accounts. The email tells recipients their last Netflix bill was accidentally charged twice and to request a refund by using the link provided. While users are taken to a Netflix log-in page that appears genuine, cyber security firm MailGuard said there are key signs the emails have been sent by scammers Those red flags include the subject line being left blank and the company's display name being misspelt as 'Netlfix', the company said in a recent blog post. In some cases, the recipient will also not be addressed correctly in the body of the email. MailGuard said the web address the scammers use also does not belong to Netflix and is instead a cheap URL bought from a cheap domain name provider. Users' details are then harvested by the fraudsters on a page asking for their credit card number."
Got that Netflix one this week.. from Oz and also several others from god knows where. Antivirus scams are big now. They would panic a little old lady (not me, lol).......saying "thank you for your renewal at $399.99 for McAfee, Norton and a couple of others"!! Even tried to scam posing as Walmart!! I know what I would do to these idiots if I caught one....and they would be speaking with a high squeaky voice for a while after!!
Could be one of three reasons it came from Oz. It really was from an Aussie crook. Or, Scammers coming over here and operating, there was a case reported. Alternatively, the Scammers routed the scam through a hacked Aussie computer or dressed it up to appear to have come from Australia. Whoever they are they should be shot or given a hundred lashes.
Oops, fell asleep watching TV. When I get another one I will run it thru a couple of programs that nail down really where it came from. But I am no good at reading code. I have used Spamcop for at least 20 years and I have the option to report the wannabee crook. I will take #4, Derek. While the address may appear to be Oz, it is probably thru a Gmail account and they don't expect "little old ladies" in Canada to figure that out.........wrong!! Btw, one of the better antivirus programs is Eset, which if I recall correctly, is in either NZ or Oz. The guy who ran it was on the same antivirus group that I frequented way back when.........and I am really trying hard to remember his name.......Rod maybe? The crew on that news group were really good at ferreting out where the dastardly virus writers really were and turning them in. Night........11 pm and I should get some "real sleep". Hope I made sense above.......lol.
Got one from "Telstra Tech Support" via landline phone today rabbiting on in an Indian accent, at least half of which I missed, something to do with Modems and wanting to make an appointment, I told to ring back in a week to make an appointment, when, if they do I'll be checking if they can tell me my account number. An afterthought, I hope it wasn't a genuine Telstra call, if it was I'm going to feel very embarrassed.
LOL......I just reported one I had a "hinky" feeling was a scam. An absolutely good fake copy of my ISP's letterhead. But I found the proof under the Sent email address (top left). They didn't have the Rogers sent address right. So fired it off to abuse at Rogers and explained. I do think I was right.... Another clue....a lot of these rather good copies ask you to complete a short survey on whatever.......or then there is the ones that say "thank you for renewing your antivirus at $399.00 or a hundred more and that they have taken it out of my account (but never specify where I hid the money)!!! Just hold your cursor over the so-called Sent Address and see if it is a jumble of East Indian junk or stuff like that. I catch most of them that way.
Btw on the news yesterday evening, our Police have arrested some people, a couple I think of Indians, who were recruiting Indian nationals to work as Scammers over here.
That is all we usually get......air duct cleaning and my computer is spewing viruses and so on. I get rather rude with those last ones cuz all they want is Remote Access and I am NOT going to give it to them. Oh,, the usually say they are from Microsoft and I say BS.....I work there, lol. Night night.....just talking to a friend over your way and catching up.
Derek....I got an email of appreciation from my ISP, Rogers, bc I caught and reported the scammer to them........I had said I was pretty sure it was not kosher, but they confirmed it. Maybe I should join the team?? LOL.
Rogers sent me 5 items for people to check which they know I do.......and I thought I would paste them here for anyone interested, besides Derek, Stay email savvy with these five tips: 1. Verify the sender: Is the sender email a valid one? 2. Hover over links: Is the URL legitimate? 3. Logos & Branding: Are logos current and does it look like it comes from a valid place? 4. Poor wording: Are there spelling and grammar mistakes? 5. Urgent Request: Is the email asking for immediate action? Stay alert, folks
