I'm on the GRO site, I haven't been here for a while, I'm looking for a death in 1963 and a marriage in 1948, I have the reference details, The date for deaths jumps from 1957 to 1984 and there is no option to look for marriages, what am I doing wrong.

You are doing nothing wrong. ():-) It is the availability of PDFs, which is gradually being extended.

Currently, they are only available from 1837 to 1920 for birth entries and 1837 to 1957 for death entries.

Therefore, you will need to order your certificates using the reference numbers that you have and you will receive them through the post. :)

Jan I thought that might be the case, I don't mind waiting for them but there is no option on the page to order them.

You need to get the District, vol. and Page No. from either Freebmd, FMP or Ancestry.

Go to the 'Main Menu' on the GRO site and select 'Place an order'.

Enter the relevant information there and order them.

Thank you Chimp, I have the details to order the cert I just like the proper search so I can check the details, the marriage cert is another issue, Family search brings up 4 records for Gladys, birth, christening, death and a marriage to a James Douglas in 1948, to the best of my knowledge Gladys never married and died as a Butler, but its always possible, there's no other Gladys Butler marrying a James Douglas just in case there were 2 Gladys Butlers.

OK. You say you have found a marriage for a Gladys Butler to a James Douglas in 1948. I take it this is the one that took place in Loughborough, Leicestershire

If you do the search backwards and search for a marriage for a James Douglas in 1948 in Loughborough it brings up:-

    Marriages Dec 1948

    Banks, Gladys - Douglas - Loughbro' - 3a -1788
    Butler, Gladys - Douglas - Loughbro' - 3a - 1788
    Douglas, James - Butler - Loughbro' - 3a - 1788
    Douglas, James - Banks - Loughbro' - 3a - 1788

It looks as though this Gladys had been married previously. She was either born Butler, then married a Banks before marrying a Douglas. or Born Banks, then married a butler before marrying Douglas.
So if you think Gladys never married I think we can rule out this Gladys as being born a Butler.

Therefore I would say Gladys Banks married a Butler before marrying a Douglas.

    Maybe this one.

    Marriages Sep 1936
    Banks, Gladys - Butler - Loughbro' - 7a -460
    Butler, Patrick - Banks - Loughbro' - 7a - 460

    1939 register

15a Factory Street, Loughborough, Loughborough M.B., Leicestershire, England

Patrick Butler, 16 May 1913, Male, Motor Tyre Salesman, Married
Gladys Douglas (Butler), 23 Aug 1913, Female, House Duties, Married
(the name Butler has been crossed out and Douglas written in blue)

Here sort of proves it, Gladys Banks married Patrick Butler in 1936 then went on to marry James Butler in 1948.

Looks like Patrick and Gladys must have divorced. Taking their birthdates from the 1939 register both of them died way after.

    NAME: Gladys Douglas
    DEATH AGE: 62

    INFERRED COUNTY: Leicestershire

Thank you so much Chimp that's a lot of work you have done,My Gladys didn't marry, which is what I had believed, the record on Family search got me wondering and worrying that I was wrong.
