William Howells was born in More, Shropshire in 1857. He married Jane Wilcox in 1889 in St Michael & All Angels Church, Lydbury North Shropshire.

I can follow the family through till 1901 where they are living in Leintwardine, Herefordshire. William is a Carter on Farm.

In 1911 Jane, still married is living in Bucknell, Shropshire with some of her children. No sign of William.

I have found a William Howells born 1857 in an asylum in Burghill, Herefordshire, says born More, Shropshire a farm labourer.

I can't make out the description of his disability.

    I think it says 'unknown'.

There is another entry 6 above John James Abbott, which also has unknown next to the word imbecile - some of the other entries have the nature of the reason for imbecility eg blind, deaf and blind etc. so it looks like there was no known reason in some cases.

I think "unknown" relates to the age he was when he became afflicted, not how he was afflicted.

So it looks like he had what we call today a nervous breakdown. Thanks Jellylegs.

Ancestry have a record on their UK, Lunacy Patients Admission Registers, 1846 - 1912 for a Wm Howells being admitted to an institution in Herefd (sic) on 14 May 1908 and discharged on 12 July 1911 having "recovered". I wonder if he is yours?

Haven't a clue where they get the admission year from though - I scrolled back through the pages but couldn't see anything, unless I missed it, which is highly possible. Maybe I didn't go far enough to find a year mentioned.

Ah, if you go to page 1 it is the front cover of the book titled Rate Aided Admissions Jan. 1908 to Dec. 1908. 1012 pages

I would say he is. Not being discharged till July 1911 would mean he wouldn't be at home for the census of that year. Can't find a likely death for him or his wfe.

I hoped the list of mourners might prove useful ;) Shame I can't find one for William.

Yes the names proved useful, there was a Sally mentioned on there. Sally was Sarah Jane Howells b. 4 Nov 1896. She had an illegitimate son, Wilfred Charles Howells b. 1 Jun 1916. I have found Sarah as a housekeeper for a bank manager at 1 Church Street, Knighton on the 1939 register (this would be the newly built Barclays Bank) That is the last sighting I can find. Wilfred is nowhere to be found on the 1939 register.

I am presuming you know his death was registered in Clun in the Dec 1977 qtr? He was probably off getting ready for WW2 in 1939 :(

Yes he died 24 Dec 1977 in Bucknell, Shropshire, Clun being the registration district. He is buried with his wife in the Cemetery at Bucknell.
