On the 22nd October 1864 at the Irish petty courts a Cornelius Whelan was fined £2 for desertion from the South Tipperary Militia. This could be my gg-grandfather whom I only know his name from his son's marriage cert, so hoping newspaper article may give age etc.
Had a look at Irish Newspaper Archives and found that my subcription had unfortunately expired. So looked at the 1901 census and assumed that Cornelius was a Tipperary man so searched fror him in that county and only 3 listed but one does fit the bill. Cornelius Whelan aged 53, so born 1848, would be 16 in 1864 is that a possible?
Thank you for looking, that Cornelius is the son of the one I am looking for (or the paper records are wrong) I have all the children that were on that 1901 census living together as a family with no parents. On his Marriage cert he claims to be 30 giving DOB of 1856, then on the census as you say DOB 1848, then on his Death Cert registered by his eldest daughter in 1910 his age is given as 72 so DOB of 1838. So all around a mystery.
Thats a bit strange as the 1901 has parents as Cornelius b 1848 as Head and Honora b.1861 as Wife and children listed below
Found on National Archives Ireland the original 1911 census...... Residents of a house 15 Carrigatogher (Ryan) Carrigatogher (Tipperary) WHELAN, Cornelius 46 Head Mary 42 John 6 Mary 3 Annie 1 House 2 ( Carrigatogher as above) WHELAN William 23 head Margaret 22 James 19 Cornelius 15 Edward 12 Michael 8 Michael Ryan 45 These are the same names as on the 1901 (Cornelius is 53)now 10 years later he is 42 and Honora is replaced by Mary and Cornelius is supposed to have died in 1910. Ages for the children are about right though. It looks like Cornelius has moved out and has a new family with a new wife. And lied about his age.
It looks like a Cornelius Whelan has held an allotment from at least 1825... From connorsgenealogy.com Thithe Allotments Burgesburg Civil Parish 1825 Nenagh Poor Law Union Owney and Arra Barony. TOWNLAND....Carrigatogher, Mr Hardings Division. Cornelius Whelan (among others) It seems every generation had a Cornelius Whelan and the deaths registered could be any of them.
That will be the Irish naming convention • The eldest son would be named after his paternal grandfather • The second son would be named after his maternal grandfather • The third son would be named after his father • The fourth son would be named after his father’s oldest brother
Unfortunately this is a different family, they have been married 10 years and had 3 children born alive and all three still living
I have now found death certs for both Cornelius Snr 1910 and Hanoria 1907 so having the family with just the children 1911 makes sense
Do you have access to the FMP Irish records? Lots of entries for Cornelius, his dog licence records, which give his place of abode, his marriage to Horora Ryan etc.
This gets more confusing. 2 of the children had their births register by an aunt Julia Shaughnessy haven't found a birth for her but may have a marriage which gives a different father to the marriage of Cornelius
