Greetings again everyone, has yet again been a while since I posted and been involved here. Yes it's another branch to follow. I am also still looking at the Platt and Wilde branches as Mum has asked me to focus on them and this one.

So I realise that the first few generations mentioned are in Australia but I have included them so as to follow the family back to Kent, England. Hope that's ok.

    Gladys Marion Winnifred Elvy
    b. 26/8/1892 - Christchurch, New Zealand
    d. 27/7/1974 - Sydney, NSW
    m. 16/11/1912 - James Arthur McKenzie (changed his name to McKenzie from Strachan - not a nice bloke from what I understand).

(Sydney) Harold Nelson Elvy (father of Gladys)
    b. 1849 - Sydney, NSW
    m. 1890 - Jane Susan Merrick
    d. 25/5/1927 - Christchurch, New Zealand
buried. 26/5/1927 - Sydenham Cemetery, Christchurch, New Zealand.
    Occupation: Piano Tuner

Robert Hammond Elvy (father of Harold)
    b. 1899 - Sydney, NSW
    m. Gwen???
    d. 1984 - Sydney, NSW

Filmer William Elvy (father of Robert)
    b. 1863
    m. 1886 - Margaret Lenham
    d. 3/12/1933 - Manly, NSW
    buried. 4/12/1933 - Manly Cemetery

Robert Hammond Elvy (father of Filmer)
    b. Kent, England
    christened. 14/11/1830???
    m. 1873 - Eliza Louisa in Victoria
    d. 1923

Filmer J. Elvy (father of Robert)
    b.
    m. 19/7/1821 - Jane Nettleton in Minister-in-Sheppey, Kent, England
    d.
buried. 21/8/1838??? in Minister-in-Sheppey, Kent, England

So it is a lot if information, only of which the first generation is really confirmed and it has been confusing with the later generations having similar names so sometimes dates have been put in wrong places.

Apparently Harold Elvy was a well known Piano Tuner and had his own shop from what I hear.

Any and all help greatly appreciated as well as any pointers as to where I can look myself.

Thank you in advance wonderful people. :)

From another site.........here passed away at his residence, 'Tregarth', Raglan-street, Manly, on February 23, at the age of 93 years, Mr. Robert Hammond Elvy, one of Sydney's oldest and most highly respected commercial men. Born in Kent, England, the late Mr. Elvy was attracted to Australia upwards of seventy years ago. He first settled in Victoria, and in 1855, with an enterprising associate, he established the firm of Wilkie and Elvy, whose successors to-day are the well-known firm of Allan and Co., of Melbourne. Crossing over to New South Wales, he established in Sydney a pianoforte and music warehouse in 1863, and the business he pioneered has flourished ever since, first at George-street and later at the present location, York-street.

The late Mr. Elvy — whose firm was patronised by many of our convents — was a great admirer of our Catholic institutions, and showed it in a practical form on many occasions. A man of imposing physique, genial temperament, and generous disposition, the late Mr. Elvy was the patron of many
young students who subsequently made fame in the musical world. He was instrumental with the late W. S. Lyster in inducing great operatic artists and companies to visit Australia. It was only
about six weeks ago that he relinquished his active business connection. He is survived by three sons and two daughters, the eldest son carrying on the business. Four of his grandsons took part in the late war.

If you didn't have it, there is another baptism, on 29/3/1829, this time at Queensborough Holy Trinity of a Jane Hammond Elvy parents Filmer and Jane, of Sheerness. On this bap. Filmer is listed as a book seller.

Filmer's burial record is correct image on FMP.

    A transcription on Ancestry:

Robert Hammond Elvy baptised 14 Nov 1830, Minster in Sheppey, Kent, England. Father Filmer Elvy, Mother Jane Elvy.

Now I'm confused. Just found this one too. Image on Ancestry.

    Robert Hammond Elvy
    Birth 27 May 1825
    Baptism 24 Jun 1825
    Father Filmer John
    Mother Jane
    Ville of Sheerness Kent

It's in UK, British Army and Navy Birth, Marriage and Death Records, 1730-1960.

There is a baptism for a Filmer ELVY that took place on 8th February 1797 at the Church of St Mary of Charity in Faversham. Parents were John and Alice.

It looks like it could be the correct chap as there is a corresponding death in Minster-in-Sheppey of a 41-year-old in 1838, so born about 1797 ;) The Burial took place there on 21st August.

Following on from this, there is also a burial in Minster-in-Sheppey for a Jane ELVY that took place on 22nd July 1828. She was aged 34, so a birth year of about 1794.

It seems that Filmer and Jane had a number of children who died young:

    Jane Hammond: b 1828, bp 19th March 1829, bu 7th December 1832 aged 3 years 10 months
John Hammond: b 1823, bu 8th march 1823 infant. No baptism found so may have died very soon after he was born.
Robert Hammond: as mentioned by @Sis in post #11

What intrigues me is why they all had the middle name of Hammond... :sceptical:

    From Trove. The Newcastle Sun (NSW : 1918 - 1954). Wednesday 5 September 1923

    FOR SHEERNESS POOR
    Australian's Gift
    ("Sun" Special)
    LONDON. Tuesday.
    Residents of Sheerness are puzzled
at receiving a bequest of £100 from
    Robert Hammond Elvy, who emigrated
to Australia in 1853, asking the
Vicar of Holy Trinity to distribute the
    money to the poor.
There is no trace of Elvy's connection with Sheerness.
