What does your name mean?

I found this site while I was messing around with lots of genealogy thumbnails open. I looked up a few names from my tree and was pleasantly surprised by the explanations which were far more probable than a lot that I have come across before.

I notice the page at the bottom says it was updated 27.2.2007. it also rather surprisingly says it can find 23,000 people with my surname (Jee) in the 1911 UK census, which is a trifle surprising to say the least

 

My name means some-one else was using it & appeared first up on the page.

 

My surname isn't on there

 

Mines from the 'olde Norse' meaning 'southern land'.
Couldn't have been more appropriate. One with the same name was first Englishman to die on East Coast of Australia and is buried at Capt Cook's landing place, Kurnell NSW

 

Mine means of handsome or of good bearing. Says it could be English, Scottish, Irish or Welsh, though originates from 8th century France

 

My McAfee blocked it as a 'dangerous' site.

I'm someone who lives near an open meadow or patch of arable land. As the family were farming stock going back centuries, that is probably right.

My maiden name was recorded as early as 1009, and possibly even originated in Scotland, which would explain my love of the lochs and munros.

 

Interesting thought.

Many of you may know my surname. My Dad said it was from a Village in Surrey and that it emanated from several hundreds of years ago. My Mum bought a 'History of the Name' 40 years ago which didn't quite match what Dad said.

The village has a website and I've just sent a contact email letter ---- curious to hear what is their take on the name

 

Mine means "Mula's Roman fort" -- no idea who Mula was ...

 

Several of the definitions 'my' surnames begin with the words "an interesting and unusual surname....." which I am interpreting as "we don't really know where the name comes from, but ......."

Or am I being a bit too cynical

well, if Mula's Head is in Scotland, where are his feet? I only ask as my name originates in Cumbria and I am wondering what part of the body that is !???

Ooohhh, it says I have a coat of arms for Bowness. Chimpy, you may kiss my foot. Hmmm, so does Allanby.

Maybe this page is selling Coats of Arms. And I do know there is one for Figueroa, which goes back 500 years, but never knew there was one for Bowness, so am a tad suspicious of that assertion.

However, on second thought, this means you have to kiss BOTH feet, Chimpo, so I think I will go with the posh bit. Bwa ha ha.

 

My first name means "Ruler of People". circa 7th century
My middle name means "Stone Clearing" or "In the lee of a stony field"
My surname means "Bold or Brave People".

If as I think it adds up to me being the bold/brave ruler of people living in a stone clearing or in the lee of a stony field, I think it's high time to get my people to put on their swords etc and go out and grab some decent land.

 

My husband's means 'renowned-fame', mine is yet to be researched. Better not tell hubby wouldn't want him to rub it in.

My Christian name means grace. His - god is gracious. Hmmm
