    ... even after investigating my family for over 50 years.

    I was at the Library on Friday, using their subscription to the Newspaper Archives, when I stumbled across the following, which was reported in the Kentish Gazette of 30th July 1833.

    The event took place in Tenterden, Kent and every single MILSTED there was one of my lot. Did the punishment fit the crime?

    No, the punishment didn't fit the crime - but he was spared.

    According to the Kentish Gazette dated 10th September 1833 on FMP there is this;

    "James Milsted, Transported for life"

    Haven't looked at the original yet but will do if you wish.

    Beaten to it, that Ann's just to quick :)

    Sorry, Daft Bat but I couldn't help myself. The word 'transported' does all kinds of things to me!
    He landed in Van Dieman's Land in 1834. Has a report as long as your arm........bit of a naughty boy your James.

    Uh-oh! :eek: I do have the odd black sheep or three.... my great grandfather was sent to prison for two weeks for "threatening Farmer Hagger with a hayfork" plus I have another ancestor who was transported for 7 years for "stealing a pair of cotton stockings, a pair of woollen stockings and a pair of silk stockings" from the Vicar of Shudy Camps.

    A James Milstead left VDL in 1852 for Melbourne. A James Millstead was killed in a mining accident in Victoria in 1875. He was married.

    Lots of help with him, Jan. Maybe you should put him at the top of your todo pile while everything is fresh ;) Everyone loves a good mystery and a bit of naughtiness.
    I can't help but wonder why the Vicar had silk stockings :rolleyes:
